Kirk was one of the first explorers to carry a camera, and the book is illustrated from his own photographs. Light on Darkness? Colonel Kirk loaned them to Sir Reginald Coupland, Beit Professor of Colonial History at Oxford for the purpose of the preparation of a biography of John Kirk. Three works by Coupland drew heavily on the papers, Kirk on the Zambesi (1928), East Africa and its Invaders (1938), The Exploitation of East Africa: the Slave Trade and the Scramble (1939). The papers were returned to Colonel Kirk in the mid 1950s and a few scholars used them privately thereafter by his courtesy.

His interest turned from ancient history to the study of the British Empire, and in 1913 he became Beit Lecturer in Colonial History at Oxford. He held the Beit Professorship of Colonial History at the University of Oxford from 1920-1948. His Chair carried with it a professorial fellowship at All Souls College which he valued highly. During World War II, Coupland devoted much time to the study of India, visiting the country twice. Sir Reginald Coupland.
