Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Eberhard Bethge

Eberhard Bethge (August 28, 1909 – March 18, 2000) was a student of the theologian and anti-Nazi Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bethge was born in Warchau, Landkreis Jerichow II, Province of Saxony, the Kingdom of Prussia, near Magdeburg, on August 29, 1909.

Bibliography Bethge, Eberhard. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: a Biography. Fortress Press, Minneapolis 2000. There is no replacement for this book, written by someone who personally knew and was a dear friend of Bonhoeffer's, a confidante during some of the most critical portions of Bonhoeffer's later life. A little weak on the early years, before Bethge met Bonhoeffer, but very detailed on the years in Finkewalde, on the Resistance and up to his death. A translation and with a decidedly academic bent, this might be daunting for some, but Victoria Barnett's cleaned up translation is not challenging to read.

Eberhard Bethge was born in 1909 in Warchau, and attended the universities of Knigsberg, Berlin, Wien, Tbingen and Halle, receiving the Doctor of Divinity degree. From 1935 to 1940 he assisted Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the preacher's seminary in Finkenwalde and, after the Gestapo closed the seminary, in the underground pastorates. In 1953 he became pastor of the German congregation in London. He remained therre until 1961, except for one year 1957-1958) spent as visiting lecturer at Havard Divinity School. This is not a book for the faint of heart or for someone who just wants a little information about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Eberhard Bethge was Dietrich Bonhoeffer's dearest friend. He knows the adult Dietrich Bonhoeffer perhaps better than anyone else. This book is deeply personal and revealing of the author and of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Nazi dissident whom some scholars say felt same-sex attraction. He is a role model of resistance to oppressive governments - so he's especially relevant now. Churches honor him on the anniversary of his execution (April 9). Speculation about his likely gay orientation focuses on his love for Eberhard Bethge, who was his best friend and biographer. Bonhoeffer is honored as a saint, martyr and theologian on the anniversary of his death (April 9) by the Lutheran, Episcopal and Methodist churches. The possibility of a gay Bonhoeffer is especially significant because conservatives use him as a role model for government resistance in their opposition to marriage equality.
