But there’s more to it than that - Anne’s stories are also captivating because she writes with such an evident sense of wonder and curiosity. Don’t believe us? Check out her history-rich treatise on the feminist power of witches, or lengthy and free-ranging dialogue with a Catholic nun, or thoughtful exploration of America’s long legacy of hate through the lens of a road trip. The story I’m working on now is about reading Girl, Interrupted during my stay in a psychiatric ward. You know, a really light puff piece kinda thing.

If you were to run into Anne LeClaire on April 6, she wouldn’t talk to you, said Anne Stein in the Chicago Tribune. Every first and third Monday of every month, the Chatham, Mass. novelist carries a card that reads, I am having a day of silence. Don’t expect to get through to her by phone, either. On those days she also refuses to listen to the radio, watch television, or surf the Internet.
Anne Cluysenaar's recent collection, Touching Distances: Diary Poems is a poet's calendar, framed by the Decembers of 2010 and 2012. Each "entry" is headed by a date, sometimes with an additional subtitle. All consist of four unrhymed quatrains. The occasions encompass dreams, memories, visits with friends, anecdotes about the birds and animals on the writer's Usk Valley smallholding, and despatches from the wider world. Out of 75 poems, 50 record the deep winter months, December, January and February. Both are from the 2012 segment of the book. The first poem, January 1, is a tale of two doves that mistake the time of year and enjoy an unseasonal mating. The narrative plays interestingly with verb tense. At first, it's the simple, authoritative past-historic.

It was the one she always used to cut the question short, whether a patient asked it hopefully, accusingly or knowingly, having glimpsed the macramé of faded burns, cuts and welts on Dr. Linehan’s arms
