Frank O'Connor is the author of the only book on short stories worth reading, The Lonely Voice: A Study in the Short Story (1962). I have read parts of it numerous times. There are some maddening things in the book, O'Connor was a man of strong opinions from a time before "political correctness" took over in the universities and some of the things in the book that he says about Gays, Jews, and Women will put people off but I do not think he meant anything malicious by them.

Summary and Analysis "A Good Man Is Hard to Find". Bookmark this page Manage My Reading List. First published in 1953, following her permanent move to Andalusia, her mother's dairy farm, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" illustrates many of the techniques and themes which were to characterize the typical O'Connor story. Since she was limited by her illness to short and infrequent trips away from the farm, O'Connor learned to draw upon the resources at hand for the subject matter of her stories. O'Connor's treatment of the characters in this story reinforces her view of man as a fallen creature. Briefly, the story depicts the destruction of an altogether too normal family by three escaped convicts. The thematic climax of the story involves an offer of grace and the grandmother's acceptance of that gift as a result of the epiphany she experiences just before her death.

The Inner Man is Peter O'Connor's fifth book. Previously he has introduced the general reader to male mid-life crisis, understanding dreams and to the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In this book he combines all these elements in an attempt to plumb the psyche of contemporary man and to discover through dream analysis and myth where men have lost their way and how they might find it again. Through dreams and myths O'Connor leads men to reconsider their approach to their lives, to look at the images and stories that one's unconscious throws up, via dreams especially, and to learn from what they can tell us. While this book is directed to men, it should also be equally valid for women who want to increase their understanding of men.
