I read it because I read somewhere not long ago that it was highly recommended by Brian Doyle. It's out of print & not even available as an interlibrary loan, sadly. It should be a classic. So I purchased a used copy here, started it only 3 days before Doyle died and finished it tonight. It's a beautifully written and well crafted novel, a coming of age story about a fisher & his friend, a Ojibway man. The inside cover ends with this: Cameron Langford has written a book that is a plea for freedom and respect for all wild creatures. With prose of lyric intensity, he captures the incredible loveliness and loneliness of their secret world.

I loved this book when I read it in high school, and I read it again years later and it brought back so many strong feelings. It is now many years later and I just purchesed this wonderful book and have read about half of it. I can say with conviction that my adolescent view of how good this book is has withstood the test of time. It is a beautiful story, full of texture, with deep insights into the ways of nature. The images of the deep north woods are so strong, especially the transition from fall into winter, and it makes me both sad and joyous at the same time. The complex relationship between this majestic wild animal and the old Indian man is just beautiful and sensitvely portrayed. For anyone who has a heart and a love of nature, and is looking for an uplifting book to share with their kids, this is one I would surely recommend.

I really enjoyed this book.It is interesting to see the world from an animals perspective.
Fantastic book. Probably one of the best animal adventure books of all time. It truly takes you inside the mind of the animal, without sentiment or imposing human emotions on it. Wonderful writing.
