Book Overviews: Top Book, Top Author, Top Genre.

Carefully packed and quickly sent. 201512220 This is a very difficult, disconcerting but moving and beautiful book. Set mainly in the walled off valleys of the french alps in a children's home and boarding school, the 11 year old author has been shipped to safety by his beleaguered christian parents in nazi germany (which holds them as Jews). The refuge in the barren mountains becomes at first a sadistic playground for his schoolmates and teachers that echoes all too closely the gestapo punishment of his parents. Goldschmidt captures his growing isolation, self awareness and sado masochism in trasnslucent descriptions of the landscape, the silent pines, towering peaks, fleeting shadowy clouds, and circumscribed heavens; and most of all the distanced view of village life in the valley below that he sees with preternatural clarity. Despondent and helpless with homesickness, images of his mother sustain his humanity but nothing abates his murderous rage at his surroundings. Only her death transfigures the situation and the coming perils of nazism transform his captors into saviors that he still cannot forgive. The scenes of his punishment, now deliberately sought out and welcomed by his mounting self guilt and alientation, are as stark as the montainside. This is clearly a masterwork that should find its place in the pantheon of world literature. It is the first book in a trilogy of his autobiography, and the first of his books actually written in German - since one suspects that part of the sado masochism that endured into adult life is also a self hatred of his mother tongue; yet his brutal honesty forced him to accede to its demands in these volumes. German literature is much indebted to this forced labor. We recommend selecting Priority Mail wherever available. (No shipping to Mexico, Brazil or Italy.)
