Family Affair Season 2

Sadly, Family Affair was cancelled after five seasons as network television wanted to focus on Westerns. Much to the chagrin of loyal watchers, we never found out of Uncle Bill married, if Cissy finally found a future husband, if Mr. French would be admitting his love for Ms. Faversham, and if the twins would grow up happy and healthy. Season 2 was when the series really hit its stride. Bill Davis (Brian Keith) and his British gentleman's gentleman Mr. French (Sebastian Cabot) care for Bill's nieces Cissy and Buffy, and also nephew Jody. The series is a situation comedy with the emphasis on "situation".

I wasn't born yet when this show was originally aired, but my, what a gem! Having lost my parents when I was a bit younger than Buffy, and actually having been placed with several of my relatives including my uncle's home, I can certainly say this show draws some real emotions for me. Underneath the fluffy warm hearted stuff, there's a real substance of need for sense of belonging, constant fear of not knowing when everything you adore will be pulled underneath from you-- and this show captures all of that, without being dark and a cry song. I wish I had a kind and gentle uncle as Buffy and Jody did-- it's so hard to find such good hearted person in today's world, when everything is about one's own success. Even if you don't have a relate-able childhood, this show strike a chord with anyone who values warm human heart.

An incredibly series from a bygone age. Family Affair isn't just about a bachelor raising his nephew and two nieces after their parents die, but a morality less each week about the world around us. In Season Two, this can be seen in the first episode where Uncle Bill tries to provide answers about where babies come from when Jody and Buffy become serious about the matter. After telling them about the stork and cabbages, Jody and Buffy finally get a fantastic answer (perfect for kids their age) that doesn't invoke a lie about birds and vegetables. It is a wholesome but powerful answer that isn't totally sappy or missing the point.

We also never discovered what would happen to Mrs. Beasley. Perhaps she was cast asunder by Buffy and would become a cheap streetwalker in a sketchy part of Manhattan.

But, even with the loose ends never tied up, this is still one of the finest situation comedies to appear on American network television.

Working my way through the series and found that MPI Home Video put duplicate episodes in for the final two episodes. So, you don't get the true final episode. I can't wait to see how many mistakes they made in seasons 3-5.

MPI will not respond to inquiries, which is an indication that they don't want to be bothered fixing their errors and is a near guarantee that the rest of the series, and probably anything they do, will contain mistakes. So, if you own MPI products, check them carefully in order to return them if you cannot live with their sloppy work ethics.

But there are also poignant moments which never seem forced. The interaction among the characters always rings true. And it shows that a family does not have to conform to the traditional norms of what a regular family should be. These characters bond beautifully.

There were some interesting guest appearances by Ann Sothern, Joan Blondell and Jackie Coogan which add to the fun. And the special features narrated by an adult Kathy Garver (Cissy) add insight and have a behind the scenes feel.

This season is well recommended along with the companion Season 1. And loking forward to three.

I can't believe how fast I watched and truly enjoyed all 30 episodes!!! Thank goodness fans won't have to wait too long for season 3 of Family Affair(March 27th)!!! It's amazing how the storylines seem even more relevant today, especially the episode when Buffy and Jody befriend a boy who is handicapped. It's so important to teach children how to act around a child who is different. I'd have to say the episode when Jody had to deal with a bully struck a nerve, because he was taught not to hit girls, and by the end of the episode I wanted to punch that kid!!! My only complaint is the dvd extras did not include a current interview of Johnnie Whitaker. It would have been nice considering he's the only other surviving cast member, along with Kathy Garver.

There's never been another show like Family Affair. Different Strokes was similar but FA was the original deal. Heartwarming stories with solid performances by cast.

My grandchildren like to make watching this a "family affair" ! They really enjoy the show, and often ask me "was it really like that" the older ones about the clothes, hair, etc. the younger ones are truly interested if there used to be doll hospitals (when toys were built to last!)or something like that. I believe watching these older shows help kids with honesty, morals and many more things that have become a thing of the past. But either way, we enjoy it as a family!
