David Baldacci's suspense thrillers, like Last Man Standing, always find their way to the top of the New York Times best-seller list. Simple Genius follows on the heels of The Hour Game and stars Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. Scarred and battered, they quickly become ensnared by a dark conspiracy that could have dire ramifications for the free world. A murder occurs at a D.C. think-tank, and King investigates. Maxwell joins him, only to discover that they are being used in a scheme that threatens national security.

Full disclosure - I am a David Baldacci fan. I have read the first five books in Baldacci's King and Maxwell series and fully enjoyed all. For starters, I would highly recommend reading the series in the order written as there is a fair amount of carry through that helps with understanding the plots. In this book, King is hired to investigate what appears to be a suicide at a clandestine operation but some have questions. As things evolve, the solution appears to revolve around the decedent's musically talented autistic daughter. In typical Baldacci fashion, the character development and pacing are first rate. Highly recommended.

This novel is the third book of the King & Maxwell series. It's interesting reading - it's the kind of book to read before falling asleep. The pace plods on a bit at times but it certainly picks up about 70% into the book. The ending is fast paced and furious which is a little like trying to rush through the exit line after a movie or concert. Nevertheless, it won't keep me from reading the other books in the series. I've already started the 4th book. So far so good.

In this rather convoluted offering, Sean King has been employed to investigate the death of a think tank scientist working in a complex across the York River in VA from a clandestine CIA facility. At the beginning, his trusty sidekick Michelle Maxwell is in an institution undergoing treatment for unprovoked extreme violence. Apparently, both of these complexes are engaged in questionable activities and it is difficult to determine which characters can be trusted. Michelle returns in time to keep Sean alive. The book is not without interest, but is a sketchy offering.

David Baldacci is a fantastic author. My husband and I get the audio cd's and it is nearly impossible to turn it off. When I was younger and would read his books, I would lose a lot of sleep and the cd's are the same. We love listening to them.

Reminded me of the old adage "absolute power corrupts absolutely ". It is hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys in this thriller that involved every spook agency in the government. There were fascinating looks into code breaking and Alan Turing's work cracking the Enigma Code during WWII. ( I even left the novel for a while and did some of my own research.) There was an extensive look into Michelle's makeup and breakdown through psychoanalysis as well as a glimpse at a child with Aspergers (not stated as such, but with as the hallmarks) who is a mathematical genius. Add to that a strange and puzzling story and this is a world class novel. The best of this partnership so far.

It doesn't take Michelle long to get into trouble in this book. She walks into a bar and starts beating up the toughest guy she sees. She almost kills him. Then she lets him live and he almost kills her. Somebody calls the cops and they save her life - barely. She dies in the ambulance and again at the hospital but they manage to save her and she eventually recovers. Sean finally realizes she has mental issues. He spends all his money and the partnership's money getting a shrink to fix her head. Then to make back some money, he takes a dangerous job in which he has to investigate the CIA, FBI and DIA for murder in two camps on either side of the York River in Virginia. Yes, they can't seem to get away from rural Virginia. Lots of nasty things happen there. On the "private" side of the River, spied on by the aforementioned Government organizations, there is a camp for the development of secret codes by a bunch of civilian geniuses. Sean's assignment is to investigate the suspicious death of a genius who swam to the CIA side of the River where there is a secret camp into which a large jet carrying foreign spies flies in at 2 am once a week.

There is a lot of swimming and deep thinking. The guy who died had a cute little girl who is, herself, a genius. When Michelle joins him, she begins by helping Sean care for the little girl. She teaches the girl to kayak. More people at the genius camp start dying. Sean chases the lonely wife of the CIA chief who runs the CIA camp. Wait a minute! Maybe SHE IS the CIA chief. No one is who they say they are including the friendly county sherriff who invites Sean to work with him to investigate the murders.

There is a lot more swimming and shooting. Along the way we learn why Michelle has to keep her trucks and cars all messed up. Sean and Michelle are tortured by the CIA. It seems to cure Michelle of her Death wish.

Very good story!

I lived in Virginia Beach for 30 years and I have driven all over the Tidewater area. I can say the CIA and the so called town, is not there. So don't try to sneak onto Camp Peary and snoop around. Trust me! But that aside I thought it wonderful that Baldacci attempted to stage a story in this area. I know the areas he described and he had to have been there to describe it. That aside, I thought it a good story. Not one of his best but like all his books, his not best is better then many others.
He created a plausible line and then exploited into a great story. Full with interesting characters with enough twists and curves to keep you guessing until the end.
Like all of his books, I recommend this book despite it's failings. Lets face, if I wanted true die hard facts, I wouldn't watch TV at all, especially the news programs. But this is a good story and very entertaining.
Starts with lots backstory and then builds following multiple stores that converge into the finally.

In this story, like the previous one, you get to know more about the leading character ... in this case, Michelle.

Ended rapidly, a little to quick for me, but a good ending.
