Next to Die (Navy SEALs, Book 4) by Marliss Melton

He is suffering with survivor's guilt and drowning himself in liquor to get through the guilt he feels.

Penny Price dreads the sound of her ringing phone. A caveat: because the book is basically about the Navy SEALS, there's a fair bit of technical terms and abbreviations that you need to get your mind around. She's convinced that the person barraging her with threatening calls is a man who got away with murder-her father's. Armed with evidence but branded a target, Penny's only salvation is the playboy nextdoor-Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Joe Montgomery. The sole survivor of the worst disaster in Special Forces history, Joe has been drowning his guilt in a potent mix of alcohol and isolation. Penny refuses to indulge his behavior and a tentative friendship begins, charged with desire

It easily is a book you could read, at the beach, in a single outing. Next To Die is actually the 4th book in a series. Of course I never knew that when I started reading. It’s the Navy SEAL Series. The rest of the novels are: Forget Me Not (book 1), In The Dark (book 2), and Time To Run (book 3). I will be purchasing them right away. I can’t wait to read them. This is the first time for me reading anything written by this author. It sure won’t be the last. I really enjoyed this book. It was sexy, funny, a total package

Penny and her sister Lia have had a hard time of it lately and Penny has been taking care of Lia for a very long time. Penny is almost ready to say no the next time Lia calls but the fear in her voice convinces Penny to take her in again. It seems that Lia called the man both girls suspected of foul play in their father's death and told him he should be ashamed. Lia is definitely the more outgoing of the two and this time Lia. Marliss Melton never disappoints. Lt Cmdr Joe Montgomery had lead his team into the worse SaEL defeat ever, this book is actually based on this real life event. Joe was the only one to survive it. He comess home damaged, both in body and mind.

4.5 Stars! Next to Die is the 4th book in Marliss Melton's Seal Team 12 Series and my favorite book so far.

This book centers around Navy Seal Joe Montgomery who is home after recovering from injuries from a mission in Afghanistan that killed his entire team. He is suffering with survivor's guilt and drowning himself in liquor to get through the guilt he feels. His neighbor is Lt Penny Price a physical therapist in the Navy who has had a crush on Joe for awhile but he hasn't noticed Penny since he's gone a lot and when he's home he has a revolving line of beautiful women.

Penny helps Joe out one night when he injures himself after drinking to much. Joe doesn't react well and is worried that Penny will realize that he is the only survivor from the Seal mission. He blasts her the following day but is surprised and impressed when Penny stands up to him. Penny then becomes his therapist and a friendship blooms. Joe and Penny eventually become lovers but Penny doesn't have high expectations of Joe since she's witnessed his lack of commitment with women.

Penny's younger sister Lia comes to live with her and the two are threatened by an old family friend they believe is responsible for killing their father. Penny finds some evidence in one of her father's old journals and takes it to the FBI who starts to conduct an investigation. Both Penny and Lia are now in danger and Joe decides to help protect them.

The romance develops slowly from friendship to lovers and when Penny's is in danger Joe starts to realize that she means a whole lot to him. I loved that Penny wasn't drop-dead beautiful and it took Joe a little while to really notice how pretty she was once he saw what a sweet and caring woman she was. I found the romance very believable and enjoyable.

There was also a secondary romance between Lia and a younger Navy Seal that was very well done and enjoyable. Although Lia came across as very irresponsible at first she quickly grew up and I liked her character and her story with Vinny.

The characters from the previous books made an appearance in this book but didn't overshadow the story between Joe and Penny. The book had just enough action and suspense along with a sweet romance and just enough heat to make it very enjoyable.

I loved this book, it was non-stop romance and action. Marliss Melton never disappoints.
Lt Cmdr Joe Montgomery had lead his team into the worse SaEL defeat ever, this book is actually based on this real life event. Joe was the only one to survive it. He comess home damaged, both in body and mind. His next door neighbor Helen, has had a crush on him forever, but he is a playboy and doesn't know that she exsists. But Helen is a physicaltherepist, and ends up being his. She doesn't give him any leeway for self-pity and when he given his own command she encourages him.
Now, Helen is in danger, her younger sister has gone and stired up their father's murder, putting the two of them in danger. Joe was there for her, helping to protect her. They became lovers - a no strings kind of thing. After they caught the Admiral that was behind Helen's father's murder Helen took an overseas assignment for the holiday season, letting soldiers with famtily come home. Her sister was off with a SeAL to his family's for the holiday, one she had met and fallen for. Vinny DeInnocentis was the youngest member of the SeAL teams, and was went after the older woman he wanted. Ophealia was 24 to his 20 and he decided that she was the woman for him. When Ophelia ment his family, Vinny through out that went his tour was up, he was going to retire and go back to medschool to become a doctor... this was the only part that didn't sit right to me. A young man that had joined the SeALs, fought his way through BUD/S to be one of the youngest SeALs, knowing what he wanted that much would give it all up after just three years. Just didn't sit right.... But in the end Helen came home and Joe met her with a huge sign being held up by two men under his command, Gabe and Luther, asking her to marry him. Wonderfully written book.

But, it had one of my pet peeves. Joe and Penny have fallen in love with each other but each one thinks the other doesn't want a relationship. Through vague communication and innacurate assumptions the author creates this artificial conflict. I get angry when an author resorts to this cheap way to have a conflict. I would have given this fewer stars if it weren't for Vinny and Lia. I loved their relationship. Vinny caused changes in Lia's life for her own good. Theirs was an excellent and fun side story. Story brief: Joe is a Navy SEAL who survived a battle but lost his men. He's depressed and drinking a lot. His neighbor Penny helps him. Five years earlier Penny's dad was killed. Penny and her sister Lia are now getting threatening phone calls. They are in danger from their father's killer. Vinny, another Navy SEAL (20 years old) meets Lia, a few years older than he. He is drawn to her and she resists at first. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: seven. Setting: current day Virginia Beach, Virginia. Copyright: 2007. Genre: romantic suspense.

I didn't like this one as well as I did the other ones. It seemed to drag a little bit. However, it was a captivating, suspenseful romance. I liked how you got a brief update on the previous characters. I would recommend it.

What a wonderful book. I loved the fact it included a main love story and a minor one. Joe (a seal ) with a bad case of survivor's guilt and PTSD has Penny as his next door neighbor. Their chemistry slowly developes. Lia and Vinny over come her irresponsibility and the fact that he is 4 years younger. Romance but tasteful. Also a mystery is part of the plot.

This is a really good book.I loved all of the characters. Joe is a complete hero and although he went through some really bad stuff,it was handled realistically and not pounded in your head over and over as in many books in this genre. Lia could have been a real pain, but came out OK.Penny could have been a little less blah but it worked out. All in all this was a great book.
