For Your Eyes Only (James Bond) by Ian Fleming

James Bond had his first drink of the evening at Fouquet's. It was not a solid drink. One cannot drink seriously in French caf‚s. When Bond was in Paris he invariably stuck to the same addresses. He stayed at the Terminus Nord, because he liked station hotels and because this was the least pretentious and most anonymous of them. He had luncheon at the Caf‚ de la Paix, the Rotonde or the D me, because the food was good enough and it amused him to watch the people

Author : Ian Fleming. Genres : Thriller, Adventure. Sudden emergencies and beautiful girls who aren’t quite what they seem and are the stock-in-trade of James Bond. And when 007 is on the case there’s only one thing you can be sure of-the result will be thrilling. In his own suave and unmistakable style.

Book - Short Story - Film - Comics - Soundtrack - Song - Characters. For Your Eyes Only is a collection of James Bond short stories written by Ian Fleming, first published in 1960. The title story of the collection lent its name to the twelfth James Bond film, which was released in 1981 and was the fifth film to star Roger Moore as the suave and sophisticated British Secret Service agent.

For Your Eyes Only is a collection of short stories by the British author Ian Fleming, featuring the fictional British Secret Service agent Commander James Bond. It was first published by Jonathan Cape on 11 April 1960. It marked a change of format for Fleming, who had previously written James Bond stories only as full-length novels. The collection contains five short stories: "From a View to a Kill", "For Your Eyes Only", "Quantum of Solace", "Risico" and "The Hildebrand Rarity".

James Bond is an icon in Western pop culture and this collection of short stories contains some of author Ian Fleming's most memorable assignments for British Secret Service agent 007. The five stories in "For Your Eyes Only" take 007 to settings around the world, where he solves cases of murder, revenge, and drug running. Bond is stylish, cool, observant, and decisive, but not completely clean ethically while performing his duties

For Your Eyes Only is the eighth book in Ian Fleming’s James Bond spy thriller series, a collection of five short stories, "From a View to a Kill," "For Your Eyes Only," "Quantum of Solace," "Risico," and "The Hildebrand Rarity, all of which had parts to play in various fil For Your Eyes Only is the eighth book in Ian Fleming’s  . For Your Eyes Only – Some friends of M are murdered in Jamaica and Bond is sent over to produce some frontier justice. Fleming mixes things up: on the way Bond meets an attractive and dangerous femme fatale. Quantum of Solace – The most intriguing entry as this is not really a Bond story. Bond listens to a domestic tale of betrayal and reprisal.

Bond watched her as she reached the edge of the tables and came up the aisle. She was coming to meet someone-her lover. She was the sort of woman who always belongs to somebody else. What damnable luck! Before Bond could pull himself together, the girl had come up to his table and sat down. We’ve got to get moving at once. You’re wanted at the office. She added under her breath: ‘Crash dive. " Sudden emergencies and beautiful girls who aren’t quite what they seem and are the stock-in-trade of James Bond. Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 – 12 August 1964) was an English author, journalist and naval intelligence officer, best known for his James Bond series of spy novels. Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & C. and his father was the Member of Parliament for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917. Educated at Eton, Sandhurst and, briefly, the universities of Munich and Geneva, Fleming moved through several jobs before he started writing.

This collection of short stories, curated under the title For Your Eyes Only reads like Fleming revisited his fundamentals after two disappointing outings–focusing instead on the quintessential Bond tropes and those storytelling techniques that made the early works so great

The destruction of a Russian hideout at SHAPE headquarters near Paris; the planned assassination of a Cuban thug in America; the tracking of a heroin ring from Rome to Venice and beyond; for Bond it is just routine. For anyone else - certain death.

I am currently reading all the Ian Flemming James Bond novels in the order that he wrote them (really recommend reading them in order.) From the first one I read, "Casino Royale" to "for Your Eyes Only" they keep the reader glued to the page. It's like meeting the real James Bond, his enemies and various other memorable characters for the first time. I would definitely recommend reading these books. GREAT READS. This book, "For Your Eyes Only", is a collection of five short stories - BRILLIANT! I'm am just sorry I didn't discover them sooner and I will be disappointed when I've read the last one with none left to read.

This book contains five James Bond short stories. All of them are quite good. Fleming had a real knack with short stories.

In "A View To A Kill" Bond tracks down the killers of a classified document courier. He comes up against a brutal and clever set of foes. In "For Your Eyes Only" he is on the trail of a brutal Cuban general who is not above using violence to achieve his end. Unfortunately for this general and his friends, Bond's 00 means that he is licensed to kill. After the general kills an Englishman who is a friend of M's Bond intends to do just that. That is if he can deal with the young woman who seems to be getting in his way.

"Quantum of Solace" is a strange Bond tale. No real spy stuff here. He listens as the Governor of Jamaica tells a story about an old friend. At the end of the story Bond realizes that sometimes the people with the most interesting stories are right in front of him and that he needs to not write certain people of as uninteresting so quickly. The plot of "Risico" will be familiar to those who remember the film version of "For Your Eyes Only." It is the story of a smuggler who is dangerous and needs to be eliminated. The only problem is that Bond has to figure out which of the smugglers he is dealing with is the man behind the drug trade. Finally "The Hildebrand Rarity" is a sea adventure complete with the rich, sadistic American millionaire, his beautiful wife, the search for a rare fish, and murder.

All of the stories are well written and quite entertaining.

Fleming is a great storyteller and an astute observer of the human condition, and this collection would be a good introduction to Bond for those who have never read any of the novels.

I first read this collection of 5 short stories by Fleming some 20 years ago, thinking that it was another novel. How wrong I was! I gave my 1950s paperback copy to someone years ago, and decided to buy a new edition that would be much easier to read ... for $8, why not? Ah, the pleasure of re-reading Fleming's scaled-down narratives to enjoy the details, the phrasing, the subtle humor and much more. If you only know the novels, treat yourself to these "miniatures".

Fleming flexed his creative mind muscle to present Bond in a different way in these five novellas. In "From a View to a Kill" Bond is sent to investigate the murder of a courier. In "For Your Eyes Only" Bond is sent by M to avenge the double murder of a couple that M was Best Man to years before. He encounters a surprise that has echoes of Dr.No and Goldfinger. In "Quantum of Solace" Bond spends an evening with a bureaucrat who chills Bond with a story of "normal people" and extraordinary revenge. In "Risico" Bond almost falls victim to a sinister plot by a supposed friendly agent. In "The Hildebrand Rarity" Bond encounters a very ugly American and his beautiful wife and must deal with a mysterious and vicious murder at sea. The back cover of the book describes the setting as a Caribbean cruise. NOT!

Since I'm a big fan of the film I felt obligated to do my homework and read the original source material. Not surprising the best scenes from the movie were taken straight out of this collection. Bond's stake out at the hitman's pool and Melina's intervention with the crossbow is from FYEO. The entire Risico story was faithfully incorporated into the film beginning with dinner with Kristatos, making contact with the Countess, and the ensuing harbor raid with Columbo and Bond standing in the "classic pistol-shooting pose and took careful aim"

Some Bond fans say that Roger Moore wasn't true to Fleming's Bond, but I say that he nailed the Risico story perfectly.

This is a collection of short stories which puts Bond if various situations. Fleming uses some interesting words that I had to look up and that is something that I enjoy since it causes one to learn new words. One of the things he does is use foreign language phrases that are not translated within the context of the book which can be a little bothersome.
The previous book in the series has a problem with focus, since the story continually got stuck in the weeds of details. Since this book is a collection of five stories that are unconnected outside of the character James Bond, story is the focus here. The focus on story helps immensely.
