Hanging Hill by Mo Hayder

The funeral was held in an Anglican church on a hill just outside the ancient spa town of Bath. Over a thousand years old, the church was no bigger than a chapel, and its driveway was too small for the reporters and photographers who jostled each other for a good vantage-point. It was a warm day, the smells of grass and honeysuckle drifting across the graveyard as the mourners arrived.

Hanging Hill was a little different than other Mo Hayder books that I have read, although I enjoyed it as much or more than her other works. It was a bit more realistic than her previous books which often required the reader to suspend reality or, at least logic, for a bit. The unreality of her earlier books did not make them any less wonderful to read but I felt that the greater reality which marked this one made it all the better. This is the first book I've read by Hayder, and I'm already looking for her others. She writes like an upscale Denise Mina, with dark secrets and horrible twists and turns, but the story takes place in Bath, England instead of seamy Glasgow. Her style is evocative and lyrical, too, without calling attention to itself. It reminds me of a slightly lighter version of Dennis Lehane's earlier novels.

Mo Hayder is one of my favourite authors and I've enjoyed all the books of hers that I've read so far.Hanging Hill was, for me, the best by a long shot....the story was fast-moving with a good plotline.Basically the story revolves around 2 sisters who have kind of grown apart until the horrible murder of a teenage girl brings them together again. There are all sorts of different characters in the book-some good, some not-so-good, and this keeps things interesting and makes you wonder what's going to happen next.
Towards the end of the story,I thought I knew who the murderer was, as was Mo's intention, but then out of nowhere it turned out to be not the case....when the identity of the killer was revealed, I literally got chills and thought "Oh,my God-I didn't see that coming"....really good twist.
I highly recommend this book if you like crime fiction-not a lot of really gruesome stuff in it,which was a bit disappointing, as I like that sort of stuff, but a really good, juicy read.Luckily I downloaded this book while on days off, as I literally did not stop reading till it was finished.Poor dog didn't get walked, the housework didn't get done, husband got no attention at all apart from "mmmm?" and "yep".
One of the best books I can remember reading-ever.

I've been a Mo Hayder fan since Birdman. Hanging Hill, a stand alone novel, is simply brilliant, with a zinger of an ending.

Starting with the discovery of a murdered teenager, it draws together the stories of two estranged sisters: Zoe and Sally. Zoe is the detective investigating the murder, Sally is a struggling single mother with a daughter who knew the victim slightly. As the novel progresses both Zoe and Sally's lives take far darker turnings and connections. Hanging Hill is a murder mystery, but it is also about lies, relationships, connections, and the secrets we cannot bear to have brought to light.

If you enjoy British writers such as Sophie Hannah, and like your mysteries dark and twisty, you should read Hanging Hill. I only wish Mo Hayder wrote more often.

I discovered Mo Hayder by sheer luck. I read one book and quickly ordered all the others. These books are the best I've read since the Millenium trilogy...They are thrilling mysteries. ( Or, mysterious thrillers!). The endings are never what is expected! Reading her has become addictive. Hanging Hill is her latest book and it doesn't disappoint! The ending of this book is actually shocking! If you love a good read, read Mo Hayder!

This was a great book. I have read most of her books and love them. Can’t wait for her to write a new one.

How well she depicts the grave damages that constrain her characters! Often those damages are a source of strength and resolve as well as pain. The author has the skills to draw us into these characters and their lives and the skills to shock us as well. While this is a "stand-alone", I would be happy to see these characters evolve in future books.

Mo Hayder can't write books fast enough for me. Many feature a detective named Jack Caffery, a very complex man, who the reader grows to love. When I had read all of the Jack Caffery series, I started reading the rest, which are equally good. The author is brilliant and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end.

good read, I`m a fan of Mo Hayder and she did never disappointed me as others did after the first time I "met" them. She is a good storyteller. No obvious plots, no silly tricks, nothing incongruos, and a lot of suspense. I`m reading yet another one of hers just now and then I`m done with all her books, sigh...I wish there were more like her. If you are a "bored" reader and have to have a book with you wherever you go (bed, travel, doctor, queue and so on) I promise this one will make time go faster.
No no no no! Cliffhanger ending! The plot twists. The character development. It's all great. But a cliffhanger ending. Crap. Be still my heart.
