Calamity Town, Dragon's teeth book. Wrightsville, a typical American town, buried in the. Ellery Queen mysteries are an acquired taste, one which I have, but I didn't feel that this was up to the usual standards of that series. Sep 29, 2017 Michael Fredette rated it liked it. This collection pairs two "Golden Age" mystery novels in the Ellery Queen series: the middling The Dragon's Teeth (from '39) with the far superior Calamity Town (from '41).
Calamity Town is a novel that was published in 1942 by Ellery Queen. It is a mystery novel primarily set in the fictional town of Wrightsville, a place that figures in several later Queen books. As a result of renting a furnished house, he becomes peripherally involved in the story of Jim Haight and Nora Wright
This atypical Ellery Queen mystery makes good reading. Calamity Town has often been reprinted and should not be difficult to locate. I have an older, somewhat yellowed, 1971 reprint by Signet Book from New American Library. I also have a May, 1980 paperback, a Signet Double Mystery containing both The Dragon's Teeth (1939) and Calamity Town (1942).

In Dragon's Teeth, Ellery Queen is persuaded by a reckless young man named Beau Rummel to set up a private detective agency on the understanding EQ will lend only his name. Then an eccentric multi-millionaire who has lived on his yacht for years comes in and retains Queen for mysterious services to be named later. Shortly afterward the millionaire dies allegedly of a heart attack and is buried at sea. EQ is stricken by an emergency appendectomy and so Beau has to pretend to be EQ and investigate
Ellery Queen books are marvelous. Ellery went to a town to get a plot for his next book only for him to get dragged into the life of a family next to where he is staying and criminal case. He tried to figure out who was trying to kill the daughter of a prominent family because he was not convinced it was the woman’s husband did it. The story is great and the characters well written.
On moving to a small New England town, Ellery Queen becomes involved in a poisoning murder. Ellery Queen investigates a series of murders in Wrightsville that seem to be related to an old nursery rhyme: "Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief, doctor, lawyer, merchant, chief"- and to at least one person in town, the chief was Ellery Queen.
