Suspicion Of Vengeance (2003). About book: Twelve years ago, the brutal murder of a young wife and mother rocked the quiet coastal town of Stuart, Florida-and a local troublemaker was sentenced to death for the crime. Now, new evidence has come to light, and Miami attorney Gail Conner agrees to take the case-against the wishes of her fiancé, top criminal defense lawyer Anthony Quintana. But to save his life, she'll have to push the law to the breaking point.

In the sixth title in the Suspicion series, Suspicion of Vengeance, Gail Connor takes on a hot potato of a case when new evidence comes to light and she agrees to guide the appeal of a man convicted years ago of a brutal murder. The transcripts show that he was wrongfully convicted, but they offer no indication of the further crimes that will be committed to leave the verdict intact.

Barbara Parker is a terrific storyteller. This legal thriller is proof. While the first half tends to be repetitive and the legalese is at times overwhelming, the second half is well paced and believable. I now better appreciate the interweaving of characters and complex plot. I think she peaked with Suspicion of Vengeance and this Madness book was a far slide downward. At her best I would compare her to John Grisham's early works. A little murder, a little romance.

Barbara Parker was born in Columbia, South Carolina on January 28, 1947. She studied drama at the University of South Florida. Before graduation she switched her major to history and then went to law school at the University of Miami. Initially, she began writing stories for her son, but it soon became a hobby and eventually her new career. Her first mystery, Suspicion of Innocence, was published in 1994 and became a CBS Movie of the Week entitled Sisters and Other Strangers. She wrote 12 novels during her lifetime including Blood Relations, Criminal Justice, The Dark of Day, and the Suspicion series. She died on March 7, 2009 at the age of 62.

Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana make a combustible mix on many levels. Passionately attracted to each other on a personal level, they are equally passionate defenders of their clients even when their interests don’t always work in tandem. Set all this against the sultry background of a Miami that is riddled with crime and corruption, drowning in drugs, illegal immigrants and shady deals, simmering with a melting-pot clash of cultures and you have a recipe for highly entertaining, hotly explosive crime and justice. In the sixth title in the Suspicion series, SUSPICION OF VENGEANCE, Gail Connor takes on a hot-potato of a case when new evidence comes to light and she agrees to guide the appeal of a man convicted years ago of a brutal murder. The transcripts show that he was wrongfully convicted but they offer no indication of the further crimes that will be committed to leave the verdict intact.

This and the others in Barbara Parker's Suspicion series would rate 5 stars if it were not for the poor editing following OCR by the publisher of the digital editions of these books. I'm so sorry that the author is deceased. I am pleased that somebody decided to convert the books to digital format, but they really should have taken the next step and read the results of the Optical Character Recognition process. The books have quite a few errors with wrong words, or groups of letters that do not form any word at all. This interrupts the flow of the story and becomes annoying. These stories are too good to have these distractions. The publisher should treat them with the respect they deserve.

I love audiobooks and just recently have collected most of the audios of this terrific 8-book "Suspicion of..." series of legal thrillers by the late Barbara Parker that center around Miami lawyers Gail Connor and her on/off/on/off/on/off/on lover, Anthony Quintana. Stumbled onto this treasure this summer. The first five were narrated by the irreplaceable Barbara Rosenblat. The last two were narrated by others, unfortunately.
(No. 7 -- Suspicion of Madness -- is narrated adequately by William Dufris and Christine Marshall, the latter doing a good job as Gail. No. 8 was narrated only by Mr. Dufris and is, as a result, disappointing because he does a HORRIBLE job doing female voices, esp. Ms. Connor.)
That said, Suspicion of Vengeance is No. 6 in the series. Have yet to find the audiobook anywhere, in any form. Allegedly, one was done with Dufris and Marshall. That version, if found, would be adequate.
My dream would be if it was narrated by Ms. Rosenblat (who should have been enlisted to do the rest of the series). I have read "Vengeance,'' and it is a terrific addition to the series, offering an indepth and unvarnished look at how the legal system deals with the death penalty.
The book also advances the maturing relationship between the two principal characters, while also continuing to highlight their human flaws -- which is what makes this series stand out in the first place. The characters may be fictional, but they seem real.
I do, however, object to all the typos in this Kindle version. They aren't present in the real book. Hope the Kindle text is updated soon, to remove some of the confusing mistakes.

Into NOT enjoying Barbara Parker's 6th outing for the legal couple, Anthony Quintana/Gail Connor. It is certainly a stretch to believe that Connor, a civil attorney, and a sole practitioner at that, would become involved with a death-penalty appeals case. Forgiving that, sit back and enjoy what is Parker's most ambitious and well-written tale of the series!
In it, some of the past jealousy dances over Connor's relationship with her ex-husband do not play a role, and her civil practice and single parenting responsibilities don't dominate the story line, as they have in past outings (this is positive; Quintana's jealousy does not become him). Nor does Quintana appear as self-assured and in control of situations in the "wilds" of northern Florida, as he does in his native
Miami. One of the most important and touching passages of the book deals with his realization and communication to Connor that she is a better attorney than is he, himself, because of the passion and dedication with which she serves her clients.
The client, Kenny Ray Clark, is on his final stretch of death row in Florida for a murder it becomes obvious he did not commit. Central to proving this is the role played by a new character, Jackie Bryce, a local deputy, and Connor's cousin.
Connor's family relationships are the background focus of the tale, and the sense of desperation the group feels while racing the clock to prove that someone else killed Amber Dodson and covered up the murder by blaming Kenny Ray, is palpable. Although there are a lot of victims in this tale, few are as tragic as the Mendozas, a local immigrant family who found themselves in the way of a land grab by the real perpetrator's of Amber's murder. You'll find yourself unable to put the book down as Connor and Quintana peel away the layers of the cover up, in a race against death.
Strong characterization, tense and thrilling plotline, and her signature byproduct of the incredible bond between Quintana and Connor all will heighten your enjoyment of this Parker
effort.
Read all 6, Parker is a terrific storyteller!

A great commentary on our criminal justice system woven into the continuing story of Gail and Anthony's relationship, cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

I have to say that I am a HUGE fan of these Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana books. I look so forward to each one and again, I was not disappointed. It was a very interesting plot, a satisfying read and left me wanting the next in the series to come out soon.(but of course, as we all know, I have at least a year or more to wait!)If you havn't read any books in this series, you are missing something worth reading, but you need to go back and read the whole series, so you can understand the relationship between the two charcters and their family dynamics. But .....don't let that stop you from starting with this one, it's a great story.

It is a good book and a good price and good quality. With the price of new books, many people could now own a lot of the books that they would like. Amazon and used books makes this possible.
The passion, the excitement the pure rage you will feel at time as well as a look in the legal world in a different culture. Don't miss this series.
