Published by the Bodley Head in 1922, it became Christie's first novel (and second story) to be made into a film; Fox Film in Germany adapted it under the title Die Abenteuer . It was adapted in the UK in 1985 by London Weekend Television and starred Francesca Annis and James Warwick as Tommy and Tuppence, who would go. on to star in the series Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime. Miss Prudence Cowley meets Tommy Beresford, both are out of work and can’t find jobs (Chapter 1). They overhear a conversation about a Jane Finn, then learn more about this name. They are hired as Private Inquiry Agents by a secret government official (Chapter III). Tommy hears talk about a General Strike (Chapter VIII). Prudence will work undercover as a maid (Chapter IX).

The Secret Adversary is the first of a small series by Dame Agatha Christie about the loveable married couple, Tommy and Tuppence. This, being their first book is an excellent one to start on- to set the stage this is all taking place before their marriage. The opening chapter is about the Lusitania and secret information given to a girl on board by a government agent.
