CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE by Edna Buchanan is the first in the Britt Montero mystery series. The author has hit a home run.

However, to fully appreciate the storyline and Buchanan's writing, a reader needs to know a little about the author.

In a journalistic career spanning 18 years, Buchanan spent most of her time working at the Miami Herald as a crime reporter. In 1986 she was awarded the Pulizer Prize. It is also of note that the author was one of the first women in print journalism to cover the crime beat.

As such, the Britt Montero mystery series is losely based on a similar fiction character to herself. Montero is 31 years old, half Cuban, single and working the crime beat at the Miami Daily News.

What I love about this story and series is that they have a ring of authenticity. The constantly changing and varied stories Montero covers, as well as a behind the scene look at a daily newsroom in action, feel genuine.

These are the journalistic days of the latter 20th century. Newsroom editors keep in touch with staff via beepers, while land lines and pay phones are the primary method of communication. PC's, laptops and cell phones exist but aren't used in proliferation as current day.

Interspersed in the storyline is Montero's best friend, Lottie, who also works for the newspaper as a journalistic photographer; a lovely, well-meaning mother who doesn't understand her, and occasional love interest, Homicide Sargeant Ken McDonald.

Edna Buchanan's Britt Montero series is realistic, informative, and fast-paced. Believable characters, dialogue and story lines. These are not happily everafter's so you may wish to have something fun lined up to read next.

Takeaway thoughts from this story:
Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago. Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already-- you can see it now!

The newspaper fiercely editorializes against handgun ownership, and I am loyal to the people who pay my salary! but the highly paid executives who write editorials don't keep the hours or go to the places that I do. Like a hurricane tracking chart, a gun is something you hope you will never have to use. But if you live in Miami, you can be damn well sure that you will need them both someday. It is a fact of life.

I will re-read this book and look forward to other works from this, author.

What a story. Real people, real action, life and death, not much truth but much deceit. The author programmed this story to tell the story of white vs black, good vs evil, written by an author with great understanding and the ability to get it all on paper.

Normally I do not get excited with feet hitting the floor and "running" to overcome the excitement. This book got me involved, "running", and screaming internally during the enormous situation of street fighting, fires, eruptions of gun fire, ambulances and fire trucks and finally to a place of safety.

Now, are you interested in a fantastic, well-written story that will open your eyes to reality? Read it! You will be glad you did!

I am so delighted to see these books re-issued. I read Buchanan years ago and recently re-read this one. What gives her books the extra, sharp edge is that she actually was a crime reporter, in fact, she won a Pulitzer Prize for her work. So, if you've any interest in how news is gathered by a real reporter, you get a fascinating glimpse in this fast-paced thriller.
Crime reporting is necessarily a brutal job in any big city. Buchanan accurately describes those pressures and the pressures of balancing the competing interests local police, politicians and editors. For those who crave "authenticity" in their crime and legal thrillers - and I do - this aspect of her work is a true pleasure.
But, apart from this, it's just good, well-plotted, well-written suspense. Enjoy.

So writer Edna Buchanan is a real life crime reporter channeling her professional self into lead character Britt Montero. Britt takes us through the life of a crime reporter, a jumble of stories investigated and workplace politics tolerated, with the addition of the mandatory "career-driven single woman without a boyfriend" . A nice way to pass the time.

I always try to read Book One in any new series or new Author.
This book seem slow to start but then climaxed into a powerful ending.
Most readers will be able to relate to this book as it now seems to be
the world we live in or have possibly been on the edges as the climax
unfolded.

I think this book was just too journalistic for me. Lots of lengthy and slightly boring sideline stories and a subplot that was good however totally unrealistic at the end even for a work of fiction. The reporter solves a major crime against the police, confronts the murderer but doesn't tell anyone before she steps out into a riot??? It was well written but just droned on when I have other books I would rather read.
Quick light mystery to read on a snowy day. First in the series that could be interesting. The detective is a woman journalist for a Miami newspaper. The author was also an award winning newspaper reporter in Miami. She is definitely writing what she knows. The mystery is good and the descriptive material is interesting.
