That Way Murder Lies. Book in the Mitchell and Markby Series). com User, March 20, 2007. The most interesting thing about this book is the very natural and realistic relationships between the people and the events that unfold as a result of these relationships. The characters act out because of their shame, fear, loyalty, envy, ambition, sloth, etc. They all have unique characters and world views and all act accordingly.

I have read a dozen of Ann Granger's Meridith and Markby books. This was the weakest. Granger wrote as if she was writing under duress. She seemed to be going through the motions of writing without a passion for her material. The plot was lumbering and many times Granger seemed to be throwing in filler to meet some story length requirement. Worse, the Kindle version is filled with typos. Most pages have multiple typos. These errors greatly diminished the quality of the reading experience.
I have now finished the entire series and was drawn into the stories in each book. Perhaps due to my own reading habits, each book started a bit slowly for me. However, I became engrossed in each story as it unfolded. These books are certainly not cozies due to the mystery content, but are not full of salacious tidbits either. They are solid mysteries that have interesting relationships that do not have intimate scenes that offend some people.
I like the Ann Granger Mitchell and Markby series.
Anyone who likes English mysteries would like this book and this series. The description of the manor house and grounds are wonderful and just what you would expect in the English countryside. the people in the village are typical of a small village. i like the idea that Mitchell and Markby are going to be living in one themselves and redoing a rectory for their home. So glad they will be getting married. this was quite a mystery right up to the very end. and the ending was very good.
There's no real life in this mystery. The book seems like the author wrote with a TV series in mind rather than an attempt at literat detection. All characters are stereotypes of those currently popular on TV. The plot is derivative and so-so, a pastiche of past successful books.
I hope she keeps writing these mysteries as I have been hooked on the characters storyline. I enjoy the descriptions of the countryside as well as her development of the main characters.
Have read every Mitchell and Markby mystery. I really enjoy how the book series progresses thru their lives and work. Ann Granger is a really engrossing author.
I really like her writing. Solid mystery with rounded characters and engaging prose.
