Mystery of Swordfish Reef by Arthur W. Upfield

Author Arthur Upfield had a remarkable gift for writing atmospheric mysteries. In this, the seventh book in the Bony series, he demonstrates that with his descriptions of the coastal village where the action takes place and the surrounding waters. His descriptions of the fishing trips that Bony undertakes while working on the case are so well written that you can almost feel the salt spray on your face and the excitement that the anglers feel when they see swordfish jumping out of the water in all their glory. A wonderful story set in an exotic locale, "The Mystery of Swordfish Reef" is a book I highly recommend. Feb 05, 2012 Sally rated it it was amazing. Shelves: audiobooks, re-reads. Having read all the "Bony" mysteries by Arthur W. Upfield in the early 1990s, I was pleased to see them start to appear on Audible.

Upfield packs his story with much information about big game fishing, as well as touching on twins, weather, visibility and coastal currents. As always, Upfield treats the reader to realistic characters and an original plot with a gripping climax. Another good Bony read. More fish in that shoal than would be wanted to feed Australia for a year," Wilton said, seriously.

This book is quite different from most modern writings in fiction in that it is written in a more literary sense. The writing could be compared somewhat to a Hemingway novel. The entire environment and the characters are so richly painted and crisply defined that you not only enter the story but really feel it as well. The story takes place in an australian fishing village where you'll feel like you've lived for a while when you're done reading. If you're a person who likes the true mystery in a story this reading is for you. If you only like blood, gore and unending suspense and thrills with your mystery fiction I'd highly suggest you go elsewhere. The story is believable and well conceived as well as very well written for its time.
Anyone who enjoys fishing, especially deep sea, will really enjoy the book and it's attention to detail with respect to fishing for marlin. Just an added bonus for a few readers out there but another fine point that shows the author goes to great extremes in an unbelievably concise manner to bring in every detail. The overall story develops a little slowly, but the rich detail, believability and fine characters make this a great read for those who would enjoy a more literary fiction novel.
Character and setting a 4, mystery a 2, all the Marlin fishing stuff a zero. The who and the why of the crime is painfully obvious early on and the crime's detection is pedestrian. Love Bony the character, but the racist personality motivations - even allowing for when this was written - is obnoxious. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Lamont Young disappearance case, btw, which I had read "inspired" it.
Inspector Bonaparte is in a new element and everyone who enjoys an interesting character, setting and plot needs to check out this series.
Can't get enough of Arthur Upfield's Mysteries. Love his characters and all the faithfully rendered descriptions of his Australia in his day as the backdrop to each and every book in the series. For a more extensive review on the Upfield's Mystery series read my review on his book The Bone is Pointed which is #6 in the series.
I have been a fan of Arthur W. Upfield since the mid-1950s. I loaned out my copy of this book and it never found its way home. I just HAD to replace it. Upfield really knew how to make you feel that you were there, either on the coast in Australia or in the Outback area of the country.
A very good book. One of the best from this author. It kept me reading without a break until it was done. I highly recommend it.
This editionis missing the map entitled, "Bony's Key Plan' which is in the front of previous editions. (The first page of this edition is page 7.) Without this map is would be difficult to follow the solution of the crime.
One of the best of Upfield's stories, all the elements of his craft- good plot, a charismatic lead character, a quick read.
