The overall aim of the book is to provide an integrated view of the separate stages of the speech chain, covering the production process, speech data analysis and speech perception. Analysis of information bearing elements of the speech signal have found applications in linguistic theory and in the knowledge base of speech technology with special reference to speech synthesis. Computer power can not substitute fundamental knowledge of the human speech communication process. The book should accordingly be of interest for several disciplines, not only speech technology, linguistics, phonetics and acoustics, but also for psychology and physiology of speech and hearing with applications in medical science.

In the 1960s, Gunnar Fant's Orator Verbis Electris (OVE) competed with Walter Lawrence's Parametric Artificial Talker (PAT) in creating lifelike speech synthesis.
Gunnar’s last book Speech Acoustics and Phonetics – Selected Writings was published in 2004, more than 40 years later. Gunnar had a large production of scientific articles in the Speech Transmission Laboratory Quarterly Progress Report (STL-QPSR), which was created as an important commu-nication channel between his group and the scientific world. Carl Gunnar Michael Fant (October 8, 1919 – June 6, 2009) was professor emeritus at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He was a first cousin of George Fant. Gunnar Fant received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1945.
