This defines the scope of the book. Professor McGowan describes the purpose of the book as the promotion of a systematic and organised approach to minor oral surgery, intended as a guide to all those who wish to learn, or improve their knowledge. It will certainly be useful for recent practitioners who need a reassuring illustrative reminder before embarking on an unfamiliar procedure. The text is organised in two sections. The first describes principles and, in the part dealing with the operation, line drawings to illustrate the description would have helped
Most minor oral surgical procedures are demonstrated except for the routine extraction of teeth; perhaps that will be the subject of a future publication. I was sorry to see no sign of incision of abscesses, application of topical medicaments for pericoronitis or the dressing of dry socket. to close a 6-month-old oro-antral fistula. The personal and local biases in treatment choices, so common in oral surgery practice, are evident throughout the book and there is little to indicate to inexperienced readers that these are not always universally accepted. Overall, the book will be of limited value: as an adjunct to other reading and supervised clinical practice it may clarify oral surgical procedures for clinical dental students and general dental practitioners.
