This was a very emotional story. There were several times I had to blink my tears back.

Emma is a very strong lady. She raised her brothers after her mom died. She is a single mom, and one of the best public defenders in Atlanta. Rick is a policeman, who works hard at trying to keep the criminals in jail and off the streets. Rick and Emma go back and forth always auguring over cases. There is a sexual chemistry that simmers between the two.

In court one of the clients grabs a gun, and before Rick can stop him, he shoots Emma. Jack was there at the hospital when Emma flat lined. They were able to bring her back, and save her, but that was the day everything changed. For months afterwards Emma's daughter, and brothers babied her. She was too afraid to leave her house. She had actually became addicted to the pain medication. Emma was using the meds to block out the world.

Rick came to her house, and would not stop knocking till Emma opened the door. He told her the Emma he knew was strong, and would never quit. He told her the truth, something her family, and friends never would. She was upset, but it got her moving again. Within a day or two of Rick knocking on her door, she had thrown away all her pain medication. The case she was working on opened old wounds but at the same time helped her to heal. This was a beautiful romantic thriller. This book was heart wrenching, and heartwarming.
In Atlanta single mom and public defender Emma Montgomery and police lieutenant Rick Downing are always arguing over cases especially when she does her best for even the most obviously guilty. Everything changes with a bullet when one of her clients Tanner Simmons grabs the Bailiff's gun, shoots him and her. After flatlining Emma physically recovers but is not the same mentally as she no longer believes in the jurisprudence system.

However, Danny needs the best on a particular case in which he thinks he made a mistake by arresting the wrong member of the family. He wants Emma to help a mom Olivier Sanchez about to lose her family over selling drugs and having her children including a nine year old be her peddlers. He thinks she is covering for one of her kids. She warns him of being too pushy but takes that case on too. As they work together on the case, the attraction they have shared for one another blossoms into love even as Emma begins to emotionally heal from the trauma of being shot.

This is an excellent romantic legal thriller with some police procedural elements. The story line is action-packed from the moment Emma is shot in court and never slows down until the final incredibly superb twist. Readers will relish Anna DeStefano's excellent Atlanta tale as Danny needs TO SAVE A FAMILY and the woman he loves.

I expected a fluff love story and got a well written, fast moving novel. Emma is a tough lady who's been through alot and just keeps walking. Poor Rick just has to keep hanging in there. Read first half in one sitting and hated to turn off the light. For a pleasant change of pace try this.
