I really enjoyed Elizabeth Boyle's latest novel, "His Mistress By Morning". After the introductory chapter, I, like the heroine, was at first confused by the turn the story took in chapter 2, but I thoroughly enjoyed how Ms. Boyle developed the plot as well as the primary characters. Unlike so many formulaic romances, the writing was original, in my opinion, and the resolution of the story was not predictable by the second or third chapter (other than the fact that this is a romance and you know when you start that the lead characters will get together). She makes a wish to be the woman he loves and BAM- she turns into his mistress.

The plot turns kept me intrigued right through to the end. As a matter of fact, I very nearly read it straight through.

Charlotte and Sebastian, our protagonists, are gradually awakened to unrealized possibilities within themselves. The emotional link between the two characters was very strong, if stormy at times, with lots of sensual tension and heat. The secondary characters were interesting, also, and I hope to read more about them, especially Rockhurst and Hermoine and the other Marlowes, and perhaps even Finella.

I found this a very satisfying read and look forward to Elizabeth Boyles' next novel - soon, I hope!

But I found this book to be an unpleasant read. There is just so much "what if's" that I can handle: I can handle the "magic ring" idea; I can handle the two undefined magical entities that have powers to grant wishes. But the device that I found uncomfortable was the transforming of the main character into a different person. (Not pretending to be a different person--actually becoming a different person--different name, different social class, different morals, different family relationships and personal history). Part of the disconfort was that this person was so different from the real & basic personality that matched the character and it had the effect of being caught in a nightmare. The character wasn't comfortable in her new skin and neither was I.

Another part was the arbitrary way in which the author caused selected parts of the new peripheral reality to change to suit her purposes. Some of the people and circumstances of the "before" world changed in confusing and differing proportions and directions. Even fantasy has to have consistency.

Then there is the change back to her original persona. She is no longer exactly as she was before the experience (which makes sense), but now she is almost the person she temporarily became and didn't like being, but back as herself, which makes no sense at all. The books ending hints that other "magic ring" stories will follow. Frankly, I plan to skip this whole series!

This book was excellent from page one till the end. As the saying goes..."Be careful what you wish for". That comes into play for Charlotte Wilmont who has loved Lord Trent forever. She makes a wish to be the woman he loves and BAM- she turns into his mistress.

You will love this book!
I was excited to purchase this book on Amazon but its been a month and I have yet to receive anything in the mail. I expected it to take a few weeks, but a month is far past ridiculous. I am moving across the country in a week, and I am hoping to get it before then but I am not holding my breath.
