"Bea could have gone to the theater twice a day every day. She loved it. Her special favorites were the Astaires, especially Fred. His dancing made her want to run up onto the stage and join him."

Time Steps is a rags-to-riches to Hollywood super star story. It starts pre-depression era and follows Bea's life, loves and tragedies into the 1970s (I think it was the 70s - it's been a week since I finished this). More than that, I really don't want to give much away. This is definitely a book for Hollywood glitz and glamor geeks (I'm a bit marginal on that), with tons of name dropping and scandals and plastic surgery that may or may not turn out so well.

"Well, at least the scene's in the can. I don't have to worry about showing the world my new cleavage anymore. At this rate, another ten minutes and they'll just explode off my chest."

Bottom line, for me is that while I liked Bea's character a lot, I'm just not that big of a geek for Hollywood that I was enthralled either. That's just me. I own the original MMPB with that gorgeous cover, but I ended up getting a Kindle copy via Kindle Unlimited, and the formatting for that new edition is so poor that I'm dropping a star off my rating. It was littered with page breaks where no page breaks should be, it was incredibly distracting. I borrowed it for free, but if I'd paid the asking price currently on the Amazon page, I'd be a pretty unhappy customer.

I read this book years ago and searched for it for a long time. I absolutely loved spending time with Beatrice Crane again. If you don't read this book, you are truly missing out.

Charlotte Vale Allen has been a best selling novelist for almost 4 decades, publishing at least 30 titles. I haven't read them all, but Time/Steps which I read when it was first published back in 1986 as an Atheneum hardback, and in a Berkley paperback edition of 1987 which I recently got ahold of and read again with renewed pleasure. It's an outstanding novel of old Hollywood. It tells the lifelong story of a fictional Hollywood star, Beatrice Crane, and it is dedicated to the great Bette Davis, who was a good friend of the author while they were Connecticut residents back in the 1970s and 80s. (By the way, Ms. Davis gave Charlotte a blurb used on the cover of her novel Love Life, published in 1976: "I could NOT put it down!)")

The novel is about a legendary star Beatrice Crane and her on again off again love affair with a dance star Bobby. Bea is a survivor, she wins and Oscar and an Emmy. At one point Bobby asks her, "What happened to you?" And she replies, "The movies happened to me." After her Oscar win, Bobby tells her, "You won because you climb inside other people's skins and walk around being them." As a writer, that's what Charlotte has done, she climbs into the skins of characters she creates, bringing them to life on the pages of her novels.

Time/Steps has a strong narrative plot, vivid characters, and it's a time travelling experience to read it It's wonderful that Charlotte is getting her backlist of novels available on Kindle editions, so she won't have to worry about ever being out of print.

I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it. Sometimes a book is like a movie and you want to enjoy it again. I know Ms Valle Allen writes romance novels. This is not a romance novel, though their is plenty of romance, it is a story of one woman's journey through a career in old Hollywood and beyond. It is filled with twists and turns, and though I personally would have made different choices, I understood and thoroughly enjoyed Beatrice Crane's journey. I was very pleased to find this book on Amazon.
