Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930), a Scottish writer whose works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays, romances, poetry, and nonfiction, is best known as the creator of the detective Sherlock Holmes. Series: Tantor Unabridged Classics. Conan Doyle had long tired of Sherlock Holmes and his adventures, finally killing him off with the idea of moving on to "higher minded" literary pursuits. But the reading public was outraged! They demanded more Holmes. This book is the collection of adventures as serialized by Collier's Magazine in 1903. The illustrations for the "Return" were done by the famous American illustrator, Frederic Dorr Steele.
In 1891, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was completely exasperated by the seemingly endless appetite of readers who welcomed each new Sherlock Holmes story with the greatest delight. He takes my mind from better things. His mother's famous reply, You won't, you can't, you mustn't! only echoed the voice of his readers. However, in 1893, Conan Doyle did the unthinkable; he finished off Holmes in the Reichenbach Falls in The Final Problem and thought he had done with the man for good. Finally, he gave in and The Return of Sherlock Holmes was greeted with huge delight. Though The Hound of the Baskervilles came out in 1902, it was set in a time before Holmes' death. The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of 13 stories.
Today, Arthur Conan Doyle is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, but he was also the author of many other science fiction and mystery novels, and 'The Lost World' was one of his best. This original tale of the "living dinosaurs" was the inspiration for many of its kind, including Jurassic Park. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The Lost World (Tantor Unabridge Classics) (Audiobook).
