A Spinner in the Sun by Myrtle Reed

Myrtle Reed may always be depended upon to write a story in which poetry, charm, tenderness and humor are combined into a clever and entertaining book. Her characters are delightful and she always displays a quaint humor of expression and a quiet feeling of pathos which give a touch of active realism to all her writings. In "A Spinner in the Sun" she tells an old-fashioned love story, of a veiled lady who lives in solitude and whose features her neighbors have never seen. There is a mystery at the heart of the book that throws over it the glamour of romance.

When the sun was high, Piper Tom climbed the hill, followed by his faithful dog. On his shoulder he bore a scythe and under the other arm was a spade. She felt herself an open book before those kind, keen eyes, which neither sought nor avoided her veiled face. All the sorrow and the secret suffering would be his, if he chose to read it. Miss Evelina knew that she must keep away. The sun set without splendour. Still the Piper stood there, leaning on his scythe, thinking. I just pick books to read at random and sometimes you get a book that are a good read and then once in a while you will find a story that will just touch your heart and let me tell you that this is one of those books, the characters in this story are great and the story at times is just too much and do not feel bad if you at times have a tear to fall.

Many years ago an elderly woman I knew lent this book to me. She had found it in her attic on her farm. I loved the book as it was so old fashioned and melodramatic you felt pulled into another time where this type of story would have been common. I had been looking through antique stores and junk shops for years hoping that I might find a copy of it then, to my surprise, I found it on Amazon.com. If you like a good old fashioned escape, this is the book for you gentle reader.

I chose this rating because it was really good and yet at the beginning it was depressing and I almost stop reading, however I want on and it became really fascinating and the story just got. better and better.

Wonderful book, I'd read it years ago and had lost it, so glad to have a copy under the old copyright, just like the original, with blank first and last pages and illustrations as I remember them.

I love Myrtle Reed and I love this book. It was a bit too saccharine, but a great chick book overall. However, PLEASE BE WARNED that one of the characters, in the interest of science, performs vivisection on animals.
Great Series all around! Jerry Dubs delivers with excellent plot and characters.
