I had already read some of the stories in this collection because the "New Yorker" stories is one of my all-time favorite short story collections. The other stories in this collection wowed me in the same way her New Yorker stories always have. Beattie is magic. The way she mixes sparse sentences with more expressive ones. The way she leads you through a story in an observational tone only to slam-dunk you at the end with the power of sudden insight and emotion. I highly rec this collection just like I have her others. Her stories never get old. They are the kind of stories you will read and enjoy decade after decade. She is truly a master of the form!

Ann Beattie is a prolific and intelligent writer. She was the darling of her generation but much of what she writes continues to be meaningful today. Read her work carefully as each word is chosen deliberately and not everything is what it seems to be. This is not really a beach read but not a difficult read either.
