Lists with This Book. Whenever Robert’s conservationism was mentioned, I winced. However I believe he loves life. His generation considered sacrificing acceptable; drew a line between ourselves and other mammals. I learned about economy : conveying a landscape or subject with few brushstrokes. I didn’t know a subject’s shape is sometimes mimicked in the curves of surrounding stones or snow.

Robert Bateman (1842–1922) was an English painter, architect and horticultural designer. He was the third son of James Bateman FRS (1811–1897), the accomplished horticulturist and landowner, who built Biddulph Grange and its gardens, in Staffordshire. Along with his elder brothers John and Rowland, Robert was educated at Brighton College - John 1855-56, Rowland 1855-59 and Robert 1855-60. As well as paintings, Bateman designed religious woodcuts, his work appearing in The Latin Year, The Church Service and A Century of Bibles. Robert practised as an architect, most notably building Collyers, a house near Petersfield. He was also noted as a naturalist (corresponding with Charles Darwin), a botanical illustrator, sculptor, book illustrator, and an Italian scholar.

Each of them is a small masterpiece, but as one character steps forward and another steps back, it is in the way they interweave that Rachel Joyce pinpoints much of the humour and tragedy of our everyday experience. Tall and broad, Binny towers over other people, even if she stoops. And she does, she does it all the time, she is always stooping and slouching and digging her hands into her pockets in an attempt to make herself lesser. She is dressed, as always, in something black and shapeless she found tangled on the end of her foot this morning as she staggered towards the bathroom. Other author's books: The Music Shop. A Snow Garden and Other Stories. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy: A Novel. A Faraway Smell of Lemon.
