Paulo Leminski Filho (Curitiba, August 24, 1944 – Curitiba, June 7, 1989) was a Brazilian poet and writer. He took pride in being of mixed Polish and African descent. His first small-press collection came out in the late 1970s. Although he never finished college, by the 1980s he knew Japanese, French, and English well enough to do translations. Paulo Leminski Filho was born in 1944, in the city of Curitiba, Paraná. When he was 12, he moved into the Monastery of Sao Bento, in São Paulo, where he studied many subjects, including Latin, Philosophy and Classical Literature. After he left the monastery, he came into contact with many other prolific authors, and suffered a lot of influence from the Concrete Poetry movement that occured in Brazil then. He made full use of all manner of things, from advertisements to common proverbs and wordplay, and composed poems by appropriating and playing with their forms. This earned his style of poetry the name of "Marginal Poetry" (Poesia Marginal). Leminski also had an interest in Japanese culture. He had a particular interest in haiku, to the point he wrote the biography of Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉), one of Japan's most famous haiku writer. This led Leminski to write many haiku of his own.
