If there's anything that writers like more than writing, it's writing about writing (that, and talking about writing about writing). And it makes sense: writing is a weird, lonely pursuit. The Woman Warrior takes the classic childhood memoir and weaves in a whole bunch of ghosts. At Young Writers, we hope that you can explore the amazing potential that you have in writing, listening, reading and speaking in English and Mandarin. We believe that anyone can be an elite writer, as long as you think you CAN! The only requirement for joining Young Writers is, you are interested in learning and won’t ever quit! There will be lots of learning opportunities once you join our courses, and regardless of your ability, every student at Young Writers will be guaranteed improvement in your English and/or Chinese academic performance
Eventually, the young writers are able to incorporate the quality crafting techniques into their own writing. Here is an example of a whole group anchor chart using the book, Hurricane! by London: After the students have been through the immersion phase, they really soar in each lesson of the writing unit. Taking the time in the beginning to set the stage for success enables our young writers to feel more confident as they begin to create their own stories. The Young Writers Studio is for young people who want to become better writers, learn about themselves, and see their island home with fresh eyes. If you are curious about the history of Key West and want to find your voice as a writer, this program is for you! Open to any student in Monroe County who will be starting their sophomore, junior, or senior year in the fall of 2019, the Young Writers Studio is free for all accepted applicants and is open to writers or would-be writers of all levels. Students who are homeschooled or from unconventional educational backgrounds are equally encouraged.
