Calderon de la Barca is indisputably one of the great playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, but there is a reason this play has generally been forgotten about as one of his works. Calderón excelled above all others in the genre of the "auto sacramental", in which he showed a seemingly inexhaustible capacity to giving new dramatic forms to a given set of theological constructs. Calderón wrote 120 "comedias", 80 "autos sacramentales" and 20 short comedic works called "entremeses".

His attention was first directed to Pedro Calderón de la Barca by a passage in one of Percy Bysshe Shelley's essays, and from then on the interpretation of the "Spanish Shakespeare" claimed the greater part of his attention. His version of Daybreak in Capacabana was completed only a few months before his death
