Midshipman Bolitho and the "Avenger" by Alexander Kent

Bolitho – 2). 1. Home From the Sea. With an impressive clatter of wheels the stage-coach shivered to a halt beside the inn's courtyard and its handful of weary passengers gave a sigh of relief. It was early December, the year 1773, and Falmouth, like most of Cornwall, was covered in a blanket of snow and slush. Standing in the dull afternoon light, with its four horses steaming from their hard drive, the coach seemed to have no colour, as it was coated with mud from axles to roof. Midshipman Richard Bolitho jumped down and stood for a few moments just staring at the old, familiar inn and.

The master removed his battered hat, and Bolitho saw with surprise he was quite bald, like a brown egg, with the hair at his neck and cheeks as thick as spunyarn as if to compensate for his loss. Hugh said, & will assume duties of second-incommand, Richard. Mr Dancer will assist you. Two halves to make the whole, eh?' He smiled at his joke. Gloag seemed to sense the atmosphere and rumbled, & 'eard that you took command of a brig, the pair of you, when your lieutenants were too sick or injured to be of use?' Dancer nodded, his eyes shining.

Midshipman Bolitho and the Avenger. Author: Alexander Kent. This story is set in the winter of 1773, in and around the West Country of England. Midshipman Bolitho’s ship, the Gorgon, is laid up for refit, and he with some other ‘young gentlemen’ is allowed home for Christmas. Bolitho soon discovers that all is not well in Cornwall. There are rumours of an increase in smuggling, even of witchcraft, and when a murdered man is found near the Bolitho house, ugly rumour becomes reality. Wrecking, the most savage of all crimes, is a further cause for alarm. Only a small and agile man-of-war can be of use against such restless enemies. To Falmouth comes one such vessel, the Avenger, and thoughts of a carefree leave are quickly forgotten by Richard Bolitho, especially when he learns the name of the Avenger’s commander.

Midshipman Bolitho's ship, the Gorgon, is laid up for refit, and he with some other 'young gentlemen' is allowed home for Christmas. Bolitho, now seventeen, returns to his family in Falmouth, taking with him his best friend and fellow midshipman, Martyn Dancer. Bolitho soon discovers that all is not well in Cornwall. Great series of book. Simply written.......would appeal to high school or Middle school boys...as wall as adults....these ships were very similar to a school, with good guys, bad guys, hero's and bullies, cliques, friends and jerks. A great easy read that has a good plot and good characters that keep it interesting. Very technical about sailing and life aboard these ships in the late 1700's.

A must have for any fan of historical naval fiction, history and great stories!

'Midshipman Bolitho' starts his career with the RN, also with me starting to collect the series, lovers of historical naval adventure will be enthralled with his nail biting exploits, this is on a par with Patrick O'Brian's 'Jack Aubrey's' various and exciting adventures.
The only sadness I have is that the rest of 'Bolitho's' books are appreciably more expensive in Kindle form , come on Amazon, give us book series buyers some discount !!

A great read. This book captured my interest and hooked me on the journey undertaken by the central charater.
I have become a big fan of this naval author.
