Taylor Caldwell was a masterful story teller. Her characters are so vivid, it’s hard to part with them at the end of the book. Her prose is almost poetic. The combination of the history of the Irish treatment in America in the early 20th century and the state of politics was something I was aware of but I loved the research she did that provided her insight and details. The Catholic Church played such an important part of Irish life, either their embracing or rejecting it. Belief in God was a recurrent theme.
I found the premise interesting but I got bored quickly. The dialog seemed like it came from a cheesy black and white movie made in the 1940s where everyone overacted. No one seemed to like anyone else. The phrase "he never liked him" or "he never liked her" was overused. These people were miserable most of the time and I found myself skipping through parts. Maybe it's just a dated writing style that I don't enjoy.
The "man" in this book frustrated me to no end! When would he start acting like a man? I had to read the whole thing to find out if he ever grew a backbone!
I couldn't put it down, it was so good, Well written, good story, the kind of book i love to read.
The last chapters seemed "rushed". Otherwise, a good read that is food for thought about the greed and evil of man.
This may be my first Taylor Caldwell novel, I honestly don't remember. I know she was well known and respected during her time. I finished this book in a week, but its only been a week or so since I read it, and I can't actually tell you what it is about. I kept reading on, hoping for more. Maybe I will need to try another Caldwell book to compare, or perhaps just go on to more contemporary writers.
I found it a little slow in the beginning, but as I continued reading I was hooked. Extremely well written. The characters are interesting and believable.
I chose this book because I am familiar eith the beauty of Ca,ldwells magnifiaent riting. Only Caldwell can tell a story so eloquently. Her facts are incredable and historicaĺly correct.
