I received this book originally in 1976 when my former husband worked for ARA Distributors (books and magazines delivered to retail stores). I fell in love immediately with this wonderful collection of Christmas stories that Ms. Buck compiled from some of her favorite writers. From the olde English stories to the poetry and pieces like The Gift of the Magi, to the sad little tales like The Bird in the Snow and The Louis d' Or, and writings to make us laugh like The Three Low Masses...there is something for everyone here on a cold winters' evening. I gave that first treasured book to my son, as he loved it too, having spent many a Christmas curled up beside me on the couch while I read the stories yet one more time. He wanted to continue the holiday tradition with his own little girl. I searched high and low for years and finally found the copy I have now, at a small bookseller. And now, my son's little girl is grown up about to become a mother herself, and I am so thrilled to find one for Haley also. These are stories that transport us to a different time and place...authors who are masters of the craft: Hans Christian Anderson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Dostoyevsky, Sir Walter Scott, J.M. Barrie, O. Henry. And of course, the centerpiece of this book is Dickens' Christmas Carol. So treat yourself to this masterpiece of fine literature...and then, on some chilly evening deep in December, when you need a quiet break from the "other side" of the holidays, plant yourself in your favorite place with a nice hot cup of cocoa and a couple of cookies, and your copy of this fine book. Forget all about deadlines and projects, iPads and cell phones...turn off the day to day and immerse yourself in a different world. I hope that this book will become a treasured old friend for you as it has for me for all these years.
Please note these are not stories written by Pearl S Buck but favorite Christmas tales like A Christmas Carl and Gift ogf the Magi; it's a nice assortment
