Margaret Bourke-White. Here is a report-in pictures and in words-of exactly what happened to our men during the bitterest phases of the Italian campaign. This report is not based upon a hurried visit behind the lines; Margaret Bourke-White spent a full five months on the Italian front photographing, questioning, observing, and living in close association with our troops. She was not content to remain safely behind the combat area. She flew over the German lines and narrowly escaped being shot down

This is an excellent book by an excellent photographer published just months after the actual military actions. The story of the Liri valey battles is accurate and the photgraphs are perfect and illustrate both the actual battlefield, individuals, and the conditions that the 5th Army troops had to deal with during the Winter Campaign in 1943/1944 leading up to the Battle for Monte Cassino. If you are interested in the WWII Italian Campaign and the battle prior to Monte Cassino, then this book is a rare find from the period. Those interested in the actions of the 34th, 45th, 36th and 3rd Infantry Divisions in the earliest and difficult days of the war in Europe can get a real first hand look the 5th Army actions of that time.

At one time had the original They Called it Purple Heart Valley. The pictures were clear and it was a great book. This copy is a really cheap copy at a very high price. Do not waste your money.

Her photography is beautiful and added so much to her story. First class war reporting on the human side of the picture. Very readable, she was fearless and very much a woman engrossed in war and the individuals that made up our support forces. I loved her description of spotting for the artillery in the piper cub. Another favorite was her story about hiding with the nurses from the German artillery. A very human picture and like all true stories not the perfect ending, she died of Parkinson's about the time I graduated from high school. The book was a bargain and an antique when I bought it. I love it. Doug Johnson
