SAINT MANUEL BUENO, MARTYR (San Manuel Bueno, Martir). By Miguel de Unamuno. If it is for this life only that Christ has given us hope, we of all men are the most to be pitied. Saint Paul, I Corinthians XV, 1. Now that the Bishop of the Diocese of Renada, which includes my beloved village of Valverde de Lucerna, has started the process of beatification for our Don Manuel, or Saint Manuel Bueno, which is what he was for our parish, I want to set down here, as a confession, which only God, not I, knows what will become of, all that I remember.
Through the character Unamuno makes a final though by no means conclusive statement on the basic philosophical, religious, and aesthetic themes introduced in his earlier essays and works of literature. The simple and straightforward plot of "Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr" is complicated by the narrative structure. Most of the text is the memoir of the fictional Angela Carballino, a follower and friend of Emmanuel who sees him as a holy man plagued by doubts but fundamentally a believer.
San Manuel Beuno, Martyr was written by Unamuno during a period of great upheaval as the Spanish Republic was about to begin and Unamuno’s six-year exile in France was about to end. The author had been exiled for openly opposing the Spanish dictator Primo de Rivera. Limited in action and philosophical in scope, San Manuel Bueno, Martyr is the story of a priest named Don Manuel who is being considered for canonization.
