Wide World of John Steinbeck by Peter Lisca

An interesting point Peter Lisca makes in this book is Steinbeck’s focus on caves, and how they often appear in Steinbeck's books. A book published after 1959 is Winter of Our Discontent-where a cave plays a BIG role. The Books discussed: Cup of Gold-an historical novel about Henry Morgan, a real person, set largely in Panama, a place that is also called "the cup of gold. To a God Unknown-the hero of this story leaves father and brothers on a struggling farm in the east, to start a ranch near Salinas in California, where his brothers later join him. This character comes across as a pagan type worshiper communing with the land and making pagan like sacrifices for rain. Tortilla Flat-really a collection of short stories about a collection of characters based on the people Steinbeck supervised when working as a chemist in a sugar factory.

Steinbeck once told an interviewer that The Wayward Bus contained "an indefinite number of echoes" of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the Heptameron, and Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. While not exactly a story cycle like those works, the novel is a multilayered series of interweaving tales told from multiple points of view. Some critics have tried to read the allegory by identifying individual characters with particular characters in the original Everyman (for example, Camille with Beauty) or with each of the seven deadly sins (for example, Pimples with gluttony).

I ordered this book as I wanted to do a bit of research for a college project - The deivery time for the book was up until April 15th. It's now the 19th., and I'm still waiting......
Before I ordered it, I knew that Peter Lisca was one of the foremost 'authorities' on John Steinbeck, so I'm sure it would have been a great help and given me great insight into
my project which was on 'Of Mice and Men'. Hopefully my own efforts were enough to get a good grade without the insights of Peter Lisca, as the book didn't arrive on time.

Peter Lisca's book is an intelligent review of Steinbeck's novels. In it he links up all the novels and gives a kind of charted history of when and under what circumstances STeinbeck wrote his novels. He explores the themes in the novels and links them with each other. For example, when talking about land in Grapes of Wrath he links back with man's relationship to land in To a God Unknown. I found his introduction one of the most interesting chapters in the book as LIsca has given a kind of history of criticism of Steinbeck's works. He is not always in STeinbeck's corner when it comes to some of his works which is a refreshing and interesting point of view. As one who is writing a thesis on STeinbeck at the moment I found the book very interesting, very helpful and incredibly easy to read. I would recommond this for anybody who is interested in STeinbeck's work.
