In early nineteenth-century France, as we shall see, to write about love, or marriage, or sex, was often to write in a sort of political code. While I shall have relatively little-though certainly not nothing-to say about homosexuality per se in what follows, I shall nevertheless want to suppose that cultural understandings of most aspects of sexual life in most literate societies are shaped by the play of conflicting historical and discursive models.

Calling on history, sociology, and psychology as well as literature as points of reference, Allan Pasco examines the conceptual shift in the ideal of love in eighteenth-century France. Pasco explores the radical, though gradual, changes that occurred during the Enlightenment with respect to how the emotion of love was viewed.

Long-standing balances of power and authority had been upset, and new tensions had been created that would continue to play themselves out over the course of the following century.In a number of cases, the focus of this volume is on the representation - literary, historical, or artistic - of the Terror itself, whether in novels such as Hugo's Quatrevingt-treize or Balzac's Une tenebreuse affaire, or in the art Salon of 1827-28. More often, however, contributors consider terror in its more general acceptation of fear or intense anxiety experienced in the face of violence, coercion, or intimidation.
