The Art of Music: A Collection of Writings Volume I (The Art of Music - A Collection of Writings, 1) by Elizabeth C. Axford

Volume-a word that refers to sound, collections, and the measurement of space-is a crucial characteristic of both graphic design and popular music.

Writers represented include Philolaus, Plato, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Aristoxenus, Ptolemy, Aristides, Archytas, and Quintilianus. In 1950, Oliver Strunk translated a large collection of passages in "Source Readings in Music History". It has passages from works not translated here, like Cleonides and Gaudentius, and covers medieval music (and later), which Barker's collection does not. I think Barker's collection would be improved by adding a glossary of Greek and English terms. There are various ways that intervals and ratios can be named: for example, the fifth is spoken of as the di' oxeian ("across the high strings", from mese to nete) and dia pente (through five).

In the same collection is a comparable set of puzzles relating to music more generally, some of which bear on harmonics. Selections from both are given in chapter 4. Something approaching the status of a complete treatise is translated in chapter 5: parts of it are certainly missing, but even as it stands it is a substantial essay in acoustics, still within the Aristotelian or 'Peripatetic' tradition.
