Bernard Augustine De Voto is an American historian, critic, essayist, biographer, novelist, and short story writer. He is chiefly remembered for three volumes of American history, The Year of Decision: 1846, Across the Wide Missouri, and The Course of Empire. From 1920-1921, Bernard Augustine De Voto taught history at Ogden Junior High School. Then, he obtained a teaching position at Northwestern University in Chicago. There, in 1924, he published his first novel, The Crooked Mile. Over the next several years, De Voto wrote magazine articles, short stories, and in 1927 moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he devoted his full time to writing.
