Down the Long Hills by Louis L'Amour

Down the Long Hills book. Louis L'Amour may never have won a Pulitzer but he was a great storyteller. It is easy to imagine sitting around a campfire and listening to one of his stories. There was a time when I would read his novels back to back to back.

About book: He had been sound asleep, and suddenly he was wide awake and listening. For a minute he heard nothing, then there was the sound of movement, and Big Red snorted angrily. Hardy slipped from under the buffalo coat and tiptoed to the door. For a moment he stood there listening, and he heard a low whine of eagerness. Peeping through a crack, he looked out. It had been snowing earlier in the night, but now it had stopped, leaving everything white and still-except for tw. hre. lack spots on the snow. Wolve. e could see them quite clearly.

What a grand adventure book! It is told mostly from the point of view of Hardy, a seven-year-old boy. It tells of the wagon train he was traveling on to meet his father and the Indian attack on that wagon train. Luckily Hardy and three-year-old Betty Sue and Hardy's stallion, Red, escape the attack.

Now they are on their own with winter coming on - no food, no blankets. But luckily Hardy is one savvy young man. His father has trained him well to live in hard country. Now Hardy and Betty Sue need to make their way west trying for Fort Bridger, Wyoming, hoping to find Hardy's father.

They must battle cold, hunger, fear, the elements, wild animals, Indians and bad guys.

This is a fast-paced story that will definitely hold your interest. Great dialogue, well researched by L'Amour like all his books - this one is definitely a keeper. And even though the protagonist is a young boy, this tale will appeal to all ages.
There is nothing else to say about Louis L’Amour. His books draw you in and don’t let you go, even when the last page has been turned. This story is the same. It is a masterful telling of the story of a 7 year old boy who saves his own life, the life of a 3 year old girl, and that of his big red horse by using his common sense and the training his pa gave him from the time he could walk. It kept my rapt attention from beginning to end and I didn’t want it to end.
This is a story about two small children who escape an Indian raid that killed their family and have to try and find the boys father. They have an incredible beautiful horse and a lot of gumption. You will have to read the book to find out if they make it. Louis L’Amour is an incredible author of western adventures. Once you start this book you will have a hard time putting it down until you finish it.
This is the second time I have read this book. First time was almost 50 years ago as I teenage girl. My dad, who was a Louis L'Amour fan and read everything he wrote, gave me this book after he finished it. He thought I would like it and I did. Growing up in the 50's and 60's, we watched a lot of westerns on TV, Bonanza, Wagon Train, etc. If you are a western lover, you will never be disappointed with a Louis L'Amour book.

This is a special story told by a skilled writer. In present times, if you let your child walk to school or the park alone, you run the risk of being arrested for child endangerment. Hardy Collins, age 7, couldn’t have been more endangered. This boy was so resourceful he managed to keep himself and a 3-year-old girl safe from Indians, bad guys, wolves, a grizzly bear, starvation and freezing. Through all of that, I believed every minute of it. This is my first L’Amour book, but it won’t be the last. It’s is just hard, with so many choices, to decide which should be next.
There are a lot of current books that offer action. This book (tho I have read it a couple of times before) is packed with action from the first page. You will find yourself cheering the main characters on, and hating their enemies. I love this book!
Nobody can pen a western story like Louis L'Amour. He has no equal in this regard. I have loved everything that I have ever read from him and often 're-read them picking out tidbits that I missed the first time through. This one is just as good as the others.
A page-turning action adventure story of an Young boy and a three year old girl left alone with only a horse to help them avoid Indians, bandits and wild animal as the fight the oncoming winter to reach civilization. The literary world needs more Louis L'Amour writers. Read the book and you'll wonder how you ever laid it down.
