After being abandoned on the island, I got bored really, really, quickly and didn't care what happened to Casca. The first 10 books weren't that bad, some were really great. But, lately they are starting to get repetitive and predictable. I miss the cult of the Brotherhood of the Lamb. The best stories included them complicating things for Casca. Dec 01, 2016 Nicholas rated it it was ok.

Casca 17: The Warrior. About book: There, together with nine other beauties, she was being garlanded, robed in a gown made of cloth from the tapa tree, and perfumed in readiness for a ceremony-the launching of a new canoe. She was delighted to see him, and with signs and gestures introduced him to her mother, her aunt, and her sisters, who were attending to her. When it was time for the ceremony Casca went with them to the beach. Once again the whole village seemed to be present. The canoe was a splendid vessel, dug out of a forest giant from high on the mountain.

Casca is portrayed in this novel seeking the Second Coming and, hearing of new gods being worshipped in the Pacific Islands, leaves the railroad gangs of post-Civil War America and ends up on one island seeking Jesus. Of course he doesn't find him and instead becomes embroiled in the politics of the community, bedding a series of nubile girls and ascending the social ladder until he ends up as one of the most important persons in the village. There are cannibal feasts and a couple of skirmishes but overall this is not a particularly gripping book.
Casca is a series of paperback novels, and since January 2014, ebooks as well, created and written by author Barry Sadler in 1979. The stories revolve around the life of Casca Rufio Longinus, the soldier in the Roman legions who drove the Holy Lance into the side of Jesus Christ on Golgotha, and (in the novels) who is doomed by Jesus to wander the Earth aimlessly, always as a soldier, until the Second Coming. The character is loosely based on the Longinus legend of Christianity.
