Chop Squads, Molls, & Suckers: A Brief Dictionary of the Vernacular from the 1930s and 1940s. A glossary compiled with the Film Noir enthusiast in mind! For most everyone under the age of 75, the vernacular, or slang, used in the novels, films, and plays of the 1930s and 40s can be confusing. Excellent book on 1940's slang and hit the spot for what I needed it for. I never believed a book like this would be out and published, but to my relief and surprise it was. Excellent reference book for anyone writing about that decade.

When an 80-year-old Ari Meyer is asked by the History Channel to tell the story of his wartime exploits with the Ritchie Boys he instead begins to tell the tale of Viktor, a soldier and friend, a young Jewish man killed in Germany during WWII. What follows is the story of two boys, who, having lost their mother and grandmother, are separated by their uncaring father in 1923 Munich, Germany; an unfortunate chain of events is brought about. Four-year-old Viktor is sent to America to live with an aunt and uncle in the affluence of Hollywood, California. Hans, the eldest, at eight, is sent to a Catholic orphanage in Augsburg, Germany and a life of austerity until he is adopted by an Austrian family five years later. Though Hans tries to keep in contact with Viktor, the miles, years, and an aunt who wants Viktor to forget his past prove too much for them. The story is complicated by politics, war, and murder; their love and loyalty tested after they finally reunite on opposite sides.
