MOTHER COURAGE (MODERN PLAYS) by Bertolt Brecht

Home Bertolt Brecht Mother Courage and Her Children. Mother courage and her . .Mother Courage and Her Children, . It was not until 1955 that I could publish a finished translation, which I did in volume two of my Modern Theatre series. I also included in that volume Paul Dessau’s piano-vocal score (songs only) to which my lyrics had been made to fit. Over the years I have changed that original Bentley Version a number of times at the behest of various publishers and producers, so that, in the end, there were several, if not more, Bentley Versions. MOTHER COURAGE sits on the wagon with her daughter KATTRIN. Her sons, EILIF and SWISS CHEESE, pull the wagon and join in the refrains of the song. KATTRIN plays a harmonica. Bertolt Brecht has been hailed as one of the pioneers of 20 th century theatre. Through his didactic styles and revolutionary theories on teaching the audience instead of just entertaining them, Brecht managed to alter the general face of modern theatre and style of playwriting through many of his works such as his 1939 epic ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’. Using such techniques as alienation and historification, he presented his plays without any sense of dramatic lighting or effects, as well as trying to remove any sense of suspense from the audience

A major dramatist of the twentieth century, Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was the founder of one of the most influential theatre companies, the Berliner Ensemble, and the creator of some of the landmark plays of the twentieth century: The Threepenny Opera, The Life of Galileo, Mother Courage and The Caucasian Chalk Circle. His plays and dramatic theory are central to the study of modern theatre.

Mother Courage and Her Children (German: Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder) is a play written in 1939 by the German dramatist and poet Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956), with significant contributions from Margarete Steffin. Four theatrical productions were produced in Switzerland and Germany from 1941 to 1952, the last three supervised and/or directed by Brecht, who had returned to East Germany from the United States.

Mother Courage (1939) is one of a number of plays Brecht wrote in resistance to Nazism during the invasion of Poland, and the theme of devastation and war are captured with honour and integrity, and expresses the idea that virtues are not rewarded in corrupt and difficult times. I have to admit I have never been a big lover of reading plays, as you simply can't see the whole picture unless seen with your own eyes on stage. Having said that, within the first scene the scene is set for something epic, that had me completely engrossed. Widely considered one of the great dramatic creations of the modern stage, "Mother Courage and Her Children" is Bertolt Brecht's most passionate and profound statement against wa. Now for the truth. Bertolt Brecht was a communist who wrote parodies to show the workers what is a not to be done.

This is a great example of Brecht's dialectical theater. It's jarring if you're used to Aristotelian theater or Shakespeare, but it is really fantastic with multiple layers. You should see it played. This edition also has great notes surrounding the play.

We read this aloud at our book club meeting and discussed its relevance to today. It is set in the 30 years war in the 1600's. Since we are going on 18 years in Afghanistan it was appropriate. Mother Courage has a resilience and drive to survive however she can and reacts to the changes in the war. It is not an easy read and can be very bitter but very emotional as her children suffer.

I need this book for a class on Marxism so I ordered it over the break and started reading it. It's a fantastic play so far. I find it really funny, but I have an odd sense of humor to be honest. I tried looking to see if I could find a dvd of a production of it, and I came up short. The scenes are really short, but the story is really good. Mother Courage is a fantastic character. This is the first work by Brecht that I have read and I'm going to see if I can find his other work at my campus library if I ever get time to read something that isn't for class.

Cheap, and same play as all the others on this site.

Worthwhile having to compare to the original translations.

Characters don't even have correct lines like in the original. Downloaded this for class and looked like an idiot when I started reading Mother Courage's lines but in every other edition those lines belong to the Sergeant.

Good
Exactly what I was looking for for my Humanities core class.
