Описание: Babs and Evie Bell, a pair of 17-year-old identical twins, are as different as could be. Babs takes the reponsibility for the house and their dad, whilst Evie& prime object in life is having a good time. Описание: A companion volume to O& previous work, & East End& this book focuses exclusively on the oral testimony of East Londoners as they tell their own funny, sad, hopeful and sometimes shocking stories of what it was like to live in our street.

To the outside world seventeen year-old identical twins Babs and Evie Bell are as close as two sisters can be. In fact they are as different as chalk and cheese. Babs is the sensible one, taking on responsibility for the house, and for their dad, Georgie & Bell, who has sunk into drunken, self-pitying despair ever since his wife Violet did a runner with another man. By contrast Evie's prime object in life is having a good time - and at the moment that involves Albie Denham, a well-known local crook

The Bells Of Bow. Author. The Bells Of Bow. About book: Babs shifted the clothes prop, letting the line slacken so she could reach the sheets that she’d pegged out before she went to the market. How d’yer feel about starting work now yer’ve had a couple of hours to think about it?’ she asked, looking over the wall at Blanche. What time have I had to think about anything with all this to do?’ Blanche mumbled, the wooden pegs she held in her mouth wobbling as she spoke. I ain’t even spoken to my Archie about it ye. ‘You know what he’ll say anyway.

Gilda O'Neill, the popular historian and novelist, has died aged 59 after a sudden illness. Her novels, including family sagas such as The Bells of Bow (1994) and Just Around the Corner (1995), drew on similar material. In 1989 I commissioned Gilda's first book, the oral history Pull No More Bines – Hop Picking: Memories of a Vanished Way of Life (1990) for the Women's Press (it was reissued as Lost Voices in 2006).

Author of My East End, Just around the corner, Cissie Flowers, The Bells of Bow, Pull no more bines, Of Woman Born, The Cockney Girl, Our street. Just around the corner.
