I first read this book when I was only 11 or 12, and was definitely not ready for some of the themes in it. However, Aron's take on ancient India interested me. She attempts to tell the Mahabharat in the way she understands it, removing the mystical and magical aspects of it to ground it firmly in the mundane idea of what human history is. Aron does, however, rely on the debunked Aryan invasion theory, that most historians give no credence to these days.

Even though Aron makes practically every character in the story unlikeable, from Arjuna to Drona to Draupadi, she does also make them readable and, honestly, I couldn't put the book down. What's amazing is that she even manages to make Krishna unlikeable, which is extraordinary, but still I kept reading because she does have a knack for creating tension and suspense. I finished this book and wanted to read the next but could never find it or find out what the second book was called. I understand there are three volumes and am still on the hunt for the second and third.
