The White Dove by Rosie Thomas

Rosie Thomas The White Dove. Published by ers Ltd 1 London Bridge Street London SE1 9GF. First published in Great Britain by Random House. This novel is entirely a work of fiction. The names, characters and incidents portrayed in it are the work of the author’s imagination

I had read one other Thomas and have enjoyed them both thoroughly although this was a terrible tear-jerker.

THE WHITE DOVE: Born an aristocrat, beautiful Amy Lovell leads a whirlwind life of extravagant parties and balls. But Amy is ill-suited to a life of indulgence, and eagerly embraces a nursing career, where she is drawn into the radical politics of the day. As the spectre of war looms, Amy's bittersweet love for the proud miner Nick Penry leads them to the conflict in Spain, where love and pain become inseparable agonies.

As usual Rosie Thomas always writes a good story. I enjoyed the book and it was interesting to read about the struggle for decent wages and conditions for the miners in England in the early 1900's. I really like the female lead character that this book is centred around. The story is set just before the second world war and Amy Lovell breaks the traditional mold and grows in to a strong young women going to nurse at the front of the Spanish Civil war. Rosie Thomas describes characters, scenes and emotion with great accuracy.

Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 9 years ago. This beautiful written novel is a historical gem for Wales and the time between the two world wars.

Amy Lovell is a beautiful, aristocratic young woman born into a life of privilege. But she is also a radical, increasingly drawn to a world less confined than her own. She trains as a nurse and her politics lead her to a meeting with Nick Penry, a proud Welsh miner. I have just finished my third Rosie Thomas book. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed all three. I actually read Strangers many years ago and never forgot it. I wanted to read it again but couldn’t remember the title or author. Thanks to my daughter and google, I found it and read it again.

It's a lovely well written story perhaps slightly heavy handed on the details of the welsh mining industry of the early 20th century. The only small complaint I have is that the Spanish used in the book is incorrect and since the author is generally so good, a simple check with a Spanish speaker would have been appreciated.

I would have given this book more stars but for the fact the ending was such a disappointment, no real ending, just left you wondering, and I like proper closure whether it be good or bad! I like Rosie Thomas but found this book not quite as good as the others I have read, but nevertheless a good read. I learned a bit more about the Spanish Civil War than I already knew. I knew a little as the Father of one of our friends died there, and his son told us some, but this book gave more info.

This is as captivating as you would expect a Rosie Thomas book to be
I engaged with the characters and through their story I learned about an era in history that I was not very familiar with.
