Melville Davisson Post (April 19, 1869 – June 23, 1930) was an American author, born in Harrison County, West Virginia. Although his name is not immediately familiar to those outside of specialist circles, many of his collections are still in print, and many collections of detective fiction include works by him. Post's best-known character is the mystery solving, justice dispensing West Virginian backwoodsman, Uncle Abner.

Melville Davisson Post tried to create a new sort of book in the criminal justice genre, and did it by making a corrupt defense attorney the star. Randolph Mason either tells his clients how to destroy the evidence, or engage in extortion or robbery schemes which are technically legal. West Virginians might be interested in this book in particular. One of the stories is set there, and Post was from that state. The writing can be mediocre at times, and the stories are very dated today.
Melville Davisson Post is best known for his Uncle Abner stories, but he was a prolific author with several other series crime/detective characters. Randolph Mason appeared in three volumes of short stories as a scheming, shifty lawyer. In the first two, he was busily evading the working of justice; in the third volume he used his talents to correct injustice. This is the first volume of three.
