Lorsque Marcel Pagnol, en 1929, fait representer Marius sur une scene parisienne, sans doute ne se doute-t-il pas que ses personnages deviendront aussi celebres qu'Harpagon ou. monsieur Jourdain.

Marius is a 1931 French drama film directed by Alexander Korda. It is based on the play with the same title by Marcel Pagnol. The film is a part of a trilogy which includes the films Fanny (Marius's ex-fiancée) and César (Marius's father). The film was selected to be screened in the Cannes Classics section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The restored film was also given a limited re-release in the United States by Janus Films on January 4, 2017, first premiering at Film Forum.

Les dialogues sont magnifiques mais dans le cas de Marius, il faut absolument voir le film . Marius est aussi grand grâce a Raimu et Pierre Fresnay
The kindle edition isn't all there. It literally is missing rather large chunks of text so there is basically no play to even read. This needs to be fixed, immediately!
As with the other other works of Pagnol I have read, I found Marius delightful and entertaining.
The book is a classic.
Although not as good as its sequels (Fanny and then Cesar), this play is full of Pagnol's genius: wonderful characterization of both major and minor characters, powerful and very funny dialogues, keen and impassioned insights into family life and also friendships/rivalries. Pagnol's stories should not be dismissed, as some mistakenly do, as nostalgic tours of a Provence long left behind in history. He is Shakespearean (he translated at least two of the Bard's plays into French) in the timelessness of his characters, conflicts, and the issues they raise. OK, Fanny's pregancy as an unwed mother is not quite the scandalous issue it once was. But it WAS. And it is NOT the main point, anyway, which is, what is love (father/son, man/woman, and so on), what does it require, how can it be truly lasting, and how can forgiveness and reconciliation be a part of love, even if some losses cannot be fully redeemed. This trilogy of plays is a work of genius, deeply funny and moving at the same time, and should not be forgotten.
This book arrived promptly, and I am very happy with the book and the service!
