Author Roy Domenico superbly surveys the regional and provincial characteristics and cultures of the 20 regions of Italy, encompassing economy, cuisine, history, recent politics, and arts. From the time people first uttered the word Italia, or some variation of it, until this century, Italians have identified more with their own locales than with what we now know as Italy. Rarely, in fact, did one nation even bear the name of Italy after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Domenico, a history professor at the University of Scranton, illustrates the importance of the 20 regions of Italy by devoting a chapter to each of them. Beginning with Abruzzo and ending with Veneto, he provides statistics and general information, including a line map of the region and another map placing it in the country as a whole. This is followed by a few pages describing the economy, history, politics, and cuisine, with a representative recipe. This is an obvious labor of love by an academician. With a scholarly tone, it is an appropriate purchase for either the reference or circulating collections of academic libraries.
