From the heyday of the ironclad to the era of the dreadnought battleships to the age of air power that made the carrier rule supreme, from the wolfpack U-boats to the ultra-stealthy nuclear boomers, this remarkable resource examines the evolution in warship design that occurred as a result of technological and tactical developments and reveals what the next generation of warships will look like.

This is well edited and uses data from Jane's, as well as updated historical information, to provide a British centric view of naval development from pre-dreadnought battleship to end of the cold war.

I had purchased used and it was in excellent shape and I find it both interesting and readable ... a far cry from the volume on WWII warships.

Fred Jane gives the reader a fine overview of the worlds fighting ships. From the time of the dreadnaughts, to our modern missile firing ships, the major maritime nations are all represented. He traces the evolution of the modern fighting vessel, and explains how the ships were improved era by era. He surveys the first and second world wars, the ships that fought in both conflicts. In this readers view he does a good jobs of showing how these ships fared in both conflicts. All in all a good catalog of ships. JRV
