The Battle of Britain: New Perspectives - Behind the Scenes of the Great Air War by John Ray

Ray tells of the inner workings of the RAF, the political battles and clashes of personality that were happening as the battle was being fought and eventually won. It isn't a hagiography of Dowding, but defends his positions and points out his weaknesses. This is a book for those who already know the Battle of Britain and wish to delve deeper into the personalities involed, rather than a complete record of events during the Summer of 1940. It is an intellectual and entertaining look at the Battle from behind the desk of its most tenacious leader. 6 people found this helpful.

The whole book is about a pissing contest between two head guys with different ideas how the fight should be fought. More boring back stabbing than i could take.

This is a unique book in that it is an assessment of the reasons for the relief of the commander of RAF Fighter Command immediately following the Battle of Britain and not another recounting of the air battles in the Summer of 1940. Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding was seen by many as the sole victor of the air battle and victim after the fact of a smear campaign by his underlings and the Air Ministry. Without spoiling the author's detailed examination of the facts and his conclusions, The book also does an excellent job of examining the British and German air forces and their relative strengths and weaknesses in the Summer of 1940 as Germany sought to drive Britain to the peace table. It is well worth the read if you have any interest in the Battle for Britain and the personalities that led the early war Royal Air Force.
